St. Ignace Ice Events Moved to Chain Lake

It’s official: The U.P. Pond Hockey Tournament and the World Ice and Snow Sailing Association championships at St. Ignace later this month will take place on Lake Michigan near Green Island, west of the Mackinac Bridge. Organizers are no longer waiting for Moran Bay to freeze, and have started set-up preparations at the new location.

Matelski Named Marina Director

Retired St. Ignace Police Chief Tim Matelski has been hired as the new marina director of the St. Ignace Public Marina, and Kevin Campbell has been named assistant marina director, City Manager Les Therrian announced at the city council meeting Monday, February 6. Both men were among 16 applicants for the directorship and among five who were selected for interviews.

Financing Outlined for Casino Project

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians has partnered with developer Lansing Future, LLC with plans to build a $245 million casino in downtown Lansing. The two entities entered into a turnkey development agreement where the developer, Lansing Future, agreed to provide funds for all costs and pre-development expenses, according to the tribe.

A county road commission ditchcleaning project last spring in Hendricks Township may have disturbed the habitat of a rare flower species. The Mackinac County Road Commission now faces notices of violation from several regulatory agencies.

Ice Follies Skaters To Perform Sunday

The North Star Figure Skating Association’s ice follies show in St. Ignace will feature skating performances set to today’s pop/rock music. The performance, which will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, February 12, at Little Bear East Arena, is sponsored by the Mackinac County Child Protection Roundtable and is a fundraiser for local child abuse and neglect prevention.
