Fish Crib Project Underway at Brevort Lake
Alfred Colegrove (left) and John Paul Brown, both of St. Ignace, participated in this fish crib project on Brevort Lake in 2003.
Volunteers with the Straits Area Sportsmen’s Club will be working for the next few weeks to construct and install log cribs in Brevort Lake to provide long-term fish habitat, reported Louie Colegrove of St. Ignace, club president. The group is working with Brevort Lake Area Development Association on the project.
The cribs are designed to provide shelter for prey species like minnows and crayfish and structure that attracts and holds larger species like walleye, smallmouth bass, and northern pike, Mr. Colegrove reported.
The five-foot-tall, eight-foot-square log structures will be towed or pulled onto the ice and weighted with concrete blocks to help them sink to the bottom of the lake as the ice melts. Snowmobilers, Mr. Colegrove said, should use caution when using the lake so as not to hit one of the structures.
