Mackinaw City’s Steve Balyo Wins Teaching Award
Steve Balyo of Mackinaw City was selected as an Outstanding Person in Education by his teaching colleagues, Mackinaw City school board members learned at a Wednesday, February 16, meeting. Mr. Balyo, in his 19th year with Mackinaw City School, is a counselor and teaches junior high social studies.
He will be honored at a Michigan Education Association banquet this spring with other award recipients from across the state.
In other business at the school board meeting, trustees discussed an evaluation of superintendent Jeff Curth in closed session. The evaluation was approved, and Mr. Curth’s contract was extended for another year. Mr. Curth, formerly the principal of Mackinaw City Elementary School, was hired as the district’s superintendent July 1, 2004.
A February student count shows the school has gained three students since September, which is unusual for this time of year, said Loretta Martinek, school secretary. The gain brings total K-12 enrollment at the school to 237 students, she said.
