The Saints stood 2-5 in the SAC and 4-9 overall after a setback to Sault High Friday, February 4, but since then, Coach Doug Ingalls and his cagers have reeled off five consecutive wins and stand 5-5 in the conference and 9-9 overall, with two regular season SAC road games left before hosting the Class C districts.
Parents Night Win
The parents of the Saints varsity dance team, varsity cheerleaders, and varsity hoops squad were honored between the junior varsity and varsity games.
In the win over the Hurons, Mark Schafer led the Saints with 17 points that included four triples, Dan Olsen added 11 points with three treys, Garrett Becker chipped in eight, Derek Neelis and Aaron Gutchess notched five each, Aaron Tarnutzer and Kyle O'Boyle both tallied four, and Adam Tarnutzer and Mike Syrjala charted one apiece.
St. Ignace led 12-10 after the first eight minutes and held a 15-10 advantage in the second quarter, for a 27-20-halftime lead.
Rogers City cut the lead to 32-28 at the 3:18 mark before Schafer drained three unanswered triples to extend the St. Ignace lead to 41-28 at 1:45, and settled for a 44-34 margin after three quarters.
The Hurons scored two field goals to open the fourth quarter, but Olsen and Gutchess answered with treys to extend the Saints’ lead to 50-40 with 3:42 left in the game. Down the stretch St. Ignace iced the victory with five points from the charity stripe.
Three-point field goals have been a huge factor for St. Ignace during the winning streak. In the wins over Roger City and in the game at Inland Lakes, the Saints hit 10 treys in each win.
"We have put together strong quarters of basketball during the last few games," said Coach Ingalls. "We must continue to show positive play, especially with the districts coming up."
Saints Down Inland Lakes
Mark Schafer scored 21 points with 11 rebounds and five assists and Aaron Tarnutzer added 14 points, 12 boards, and four steals to lead the Saints over Inland Lakes.
Jake Weiss chipped in 10 points, Garrett Becker notched nine points with seven rebounds, Aaron Gutchess tallied seven points, Adam Tarnutzer charted four, Derek Neelis marked three, and Kyle O'Boyle counted two.
St. Ignace exploded for seven triples in the first half for a 42-21 halftime lead, as Weiss and Schafer tallied two each and Adam Tarnutzer, Neelis, and Gutchess chipped in one apiece.
The Saints held a 22-12 lead after the first eight minutes and outscored the Bulldogs 20-9 in the second quarter to extend the lead to 21 points at intermission.
The host Inland Lakes squad held a 15-14 scoring edge in the third quarter and sliced the final score to 12 after outscoring the Saints 22-14 in the final period.
Saints JV Post Two Victories
St. Ignace junior varsity won its third straight game after defeating Rogers City 55-54 Friday, February 15, and downing Inland Lakes 83-34 Tuesday, February 15.
James Peterson scored on a putback with 1.2 seconds remaining to lift the Saints to the one-point win over the Hurons.
Jake Weiss scored 20 points to lead the Saints, while Derek Rutledge added 10, James Peterson chipped in seven, Lewie Mullins and Kyle Spencer both notched six, Mario Calcaterra tallied three, Justin Emery charted two, and Ben Matelski marked one.
In the win at Inland Lakes, Lewie Mullins and Dan Olsen scored 15 points each and Kyle Spencer added 13 to lead the Saints attack. Nick Montie chipped in nine, Mario Calcaterra notched eight, James Peterson and Derek Rutledge tallied seven each, Ben Matelski charted four, Justin Emery marked three, and Shane Spring counted two.
