Rudyard split its Straits Area Conference games, defeating Lincoln-Alcona 62-48 Friday, February 18, before falling to Newberry 51-50 Tuesday, February 15.
The win over Lincoln-Alcona and the Cheboygan Chiefs’ setback at the hands of Newberry earned the Bulldogs (8-3) a share of the SAC crown.
The Bulldogs final league game is at home against St. Ignace Tuesday, February 22.
Balanced scoring was the key as Trent Salo led the Bulldogs with 22 points, six assists, and four steals, Chris Schroeder added 13 points and 12 rebounds, Travis Clegg chipped in 12 points and eight boards, Brian Norton notched 11, Jordan Gaskin tallied three, and Dennis Ross charted one.
Rudyard, 12-6 overall, led 16-12 after the first eight minutes and increased the margin to 27-16 with a 11-4 margin in the second quarter.
The Tigers cut the Bulldogs lead to 45-38 with a 22-18 advantage in the third quarter before Rudyard outscored Lincoln-Alcona 17-10 in the final period.
Bulldogs Fall to Indians
In the setback at Newberry, Travis Clegg scored 15 points and Dennis Ross added 11 for the Bulldogs, while Trent Salo and Brian Norton chipped in seven each, Nick Pavloski and Adam Ireland both notched four, and Jordan Gaskin tallied two.
Matt Payment scored 14 points and David Carmody added 12 for the Indians.
Rudyard led 18-11 after the first quarter and maintained a 28-23-halftime margin after Newberry held a 12-10 scoring edge in the second period.
The Indians turned the tide by outscoring the Bulldogs 17-9 in the third quarter for a 40-37 lead, and hung on as Rudyard closed the game with a 13-11 advantage.
Rudyard closes out the regular season with a home non-conference game with Onaway Friday, February 25, before the Class C districts at St. Ignace.
