Engadine Beats Panthers, Fall to Bays

Engadine split its Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference contests, defeating Pickford 65-44 Tuesday, February 15, but falling to Brimley 67-54 Friday, February 18.

The Eagles, 2-4 in the EUPC and 10-7 overall, were led by Scott Butkovich with 23 points, including five triples and six rebounds. Duncan MacArthur added 11 points and nine boards, Stefen Albright chipped in nine points and nine rebounds, Todd Midgyett notched eight, Tracy Polachek tallied six points and five boards, Brad Visser charted five, Derek Derusha marked two, and Kris Kerbersky counted one. Butkovich was one triple away from tying the school record of six, set by Paul Kleeman.

PickfordKip Cline Pickford Kip Cline scored 11 points for the Panthers, while Pat Savoie added nine, Jon Clegg chipped in eight, Richie Boal notched six, James Snyder tallied five, Jordan Potter charted three, and Jon Snider marked two.

The Eagles led 18-11 after the first eight minutes and increased the margin to 34-22 at halftime, with a 16-11 advantage in the second quarter.

Both teams scored 11 points in the third quarter for a 45-33 score, before the Eagles outscored the Panthers 20-11 in the final period to post the win.

Eagles Fall to Bays

The third quarter was the downfall for the Eagles in their setback to the Bays.

Brimley led 20-16 after the first eight minutes before Engadine took control with a 21-12 margin in the second quarter, for a 37-32 halftime lead.

"We played well in the first half," said Eagles Coach Elmer Albright. "We played within ourselves and shot the ball well.”

The Bays outscored the Eagles 19-8 in the third quarter for a 51-45 lead and closed out the game with a 16-9 advantage in the final period.

"Brimley changed their press and mismatches hurt us, while they made their shots in the second half and we didn't," added Albright.

Scott Butkovich scored 14 points with six rebounds to lead the Eagles, while Duncan MacArthur added 11 points and six boards. Jacob Swider chipped in eight points, Kris Kerbersky and Tracy Polachek notched six each, Stefen Albright tallied five points, five assists, and four rebounds, and Brad Visser and Derek Derusha both charted two.

Travis Lynn scored 22 points and Derek Bowen added 16 to lead the Bays. Nathan Halvorsen notched 10, Josh Winkler and Kellen Perron chipped in seven apiece, Derek Parish tallied three, and Jake Parish charted two.

Brimley is 15-3 on the season and closed out the league schedule with a 6-2 mark.

Panthers Fall to Hornets

Pickford fell to Pellston 58-42 during a home non-conference contest Friday, February 18.

Kip Cline led the Panthers with 15 points, James Snyder added 12, Matt Romatz and Richie Boal chipped in seven each, and Jon Clegg notched one.

The Panthers, playing shorthanded, led 13-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 24-22 at halftime after the Hornets held a 13-9 margin in the second period.

Pellston outscored Pickford 34-18 in the second half that included 21-11 in the third quarter and 13-7 in the final eight minutes.

The Panthers, 8-10 on the season, will close out the season with non-conference home games against Mackinaw City and Central Lake.
