Lakers Thank Parents with Sweep of Grand Marais
Lady Lakers Win Six Matches
The Lady Lakers took just the minimum amount of matches to defeat the Polar Bears with 25-15, 25-13, and 25-16 victories Friday evening and 25-20, 25-14, and 25-18 wins Saturday morning.
"I was pleased with our effort, especially for the parents and seniors playing at home for the final time," said Lakers Coach Nikki Helsel.
Bliss
Beardsley
Senior co-captains Bliss Beardsley and Emma Chambers played at home for the final time in their Blue and White uniforms. Beardsley recorded 20 points, eight aces, 46 sets, 16 attacks, 15 assists, 11 kills, and 10 digs. Chambers added 15 points, 10 aces, 26 kills, 22 digs, 14 serve receives, eight kills, and two sets.
Emily St. Onge led the Lady Lakers with 26 points, 14 aces, 17 digs, 15 attacks, four kills, and two aces. Christina McLean chipped in seven points, four aces, 11 digs, eight serve receives, and one attack. Danielle Wightman notched six points, four aces, seven attacks, two assists, two sets, two digs, and one kill. Shayleen Mosley tallied one point, 10 digs, seven attacks, seven serve receives, and one kill. Arial Leeper charted five sets, four attacks, three assists, and two serve receives. Karlena Mosley marked eight digs and two serve receives.
Richard Chaffee
Mackinac Island stands 20-10-3 overall on the season, and completes the NLL with a 7-2 mark before heading to the districts Saturday, February 26.
Balanced Scoring Lifts Lakers
Mackinac Island improved to 6-2 in the NLL and 14-3 overall after sweeping Grand Marais 83-40 Friday and 54-20 Saturday, February 18 and 19.
Senior Richard Chaffee, playing in his final home game, and Jason Pettit combined for 49 points in the win Friday, as Chaffee scored 25 points, grabbed 25 rebounds, three blocked shots, and three assists, and Pettit notched 24 points to lead the Lakers.
Michael Gamble added nine points. Robert Chambers chipped in six points and three steals. Sam Kamphuis tallied five points and three steals. Woody Beardsley charted four points and 16 boards. Ben Mosley marked four points and seven assists. Riley Chaffee counted four points, and Caleb Straight scored two points.
Mackinac Island led 42-20 at halftime and outscored the Polar Bears 41-20 in the second half to post the league win.
Woody Beardsley led the Lakers in the win Saturday morning with 21 points, 12 rebounds, and four steals. Richard Chaffee added 10 points and 17 boards. Robert Chambers chipped in six points and four assists. Jason Pettit notched six points. Sam Kamphuis tallied four points. Michael Gamble charted three. Ben Mosley marked two points, five steals, and four assists. Caleb Straight counted two points.
"Everyone contributed to the wins," said Lakers Coach Ryan Fox. "The younger players received valuable playing time. We played well as a team."
The Lakers led 33-11 at halftime and held a 21-11 offensive advantage in the second half.
The Lakers basketball team will entertain Paradise Friday, February 25, and Saturday, February 26, in the final home game of the regular season before district competition at Pickford.
