MARCH 14, 1891
The telephone line to Allenville and Ozark will be built as soon as the frost is out of the ground, so that the poles can be set.
At the last meeting of the St. Ignace Fire Department, the following fire alarm system was adopted: The bell is to be rung as usual for fire alarm; if fire is in the first ward, one stroke of bell at short intervals; second ward, two strokes; third ward, three strokes; fourth ward, four strokes. The public and firemen are requested to make a note of the above signals.
Captain John McCarty says the road over the ice to the Island is in excellent condition at present.
Alex Brown was quite badly injured at the dock Wednesday morning when the St. Ignace arrived. He was struck in the legs by the lever used to raise and lower the end of the dock to receive the boat. No bones were broken, but his injuries are painful.

All the fishing shanties in Brevort are coming ashore one by one every day on account of the spring weather, making the condition of the ice dangerous.
Workers have started on the box factory, to be built at the point at Hunts Spur.
Judge J.J. Brown left Saturday evening on a two-week combined business and pleasure trip to Detroit and Lansing.

The 59-ship fleet of Pittsburgh Steamship Division will proceed to Lake Superior to open the shipping season April 4. The cutter Mackinaw already is breaking ice in the Straits and will break ice along the route to Lake Superior.
This week at Ray’s Home & Auto Supply in St. Ignace: Dominion Automatic Toaster, $15.95; Car-Truck Thermometer, 49¢; Little Gilbert Alarm Clock, $3.79; Firestone 26” Century Cruiser Bicycle, including one year’s fire and theft insurance in the purchase price, $69.95.
Two fish shanties on bay ice burned down last Saturday. Despite encroachment of open water outside the bay, many shanties remain on the ice in the inner bay and cars have been running on the ice daily.
Recognition will be given to the 200-year-old Michigan fishing industry throughout the state next week. In proclaiming the week of March 20-26 as Michigan Fish Week, Governor G. Mennen Williams said the industry’s commercial and sport fishermen have been “a tremendous influence in creating the water wonderland that glorifies the State of Michigan.” Nearly 5,000 commercial fishermen work in Michigan. In their operations, they ply state waters with 661 vessels and 2,001 boats.

Tillie Maass of Raber won a 1990 Dodge Spirit on “Fame and Fortune” January 22. Tillie’s husband, Bob, purchased the lucky ticket for her birthday. Tillie mailed in the ticket and was notified 10 days later that she would be a contestant on the show. During this time period, the couple also celebrated their 49th anniversary.
Vern and Mary Lynn Huyck traveled to Pickford from their winter home in Florida to attend a retirement party for their son-in-law, Dan Inglis. Dan served for 25 years as a Michigan State Police trooper.
The Cedarville Trojans won their fourth straight volleyball regional title Saturday, March 10, defeating the Pickford Panthers.
LaSalle High School’s Students of the Month are Leslie Gardiner, a senior, the daughter of Dave and Sarah Gardiner, and Jason Weiss, a junior, the son of Rick and Debbie Weiss.
