Brevort

By Lois Movalson - 292-5581

As this morning is so warm and beautiful, I know everyone is out enjoying the weather.

Dave is down at Onaway to do some serious turkey hunting.

Sally Conklin of Shelby Township and the Clearwater Condominiums took a trip to Rome to the Pope's funeral. She booked a flight three days before the event was to take place, went by herself, and can't speak the language, or any language for that matter, but Sally is resourceful. She didn't get lost too many times. She was fortunate to find lodging on such short notice. I can't wait until Sally gets back to Brevort and we get the full story of her adventures and misadventures. I got this report from Jackie Rippett, who spoke to Sally via phone recently.

Larry and Mary Ann First celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by taking a trip to Dayton, Ohio, and visiting the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Base. They took the side roads home and Mary Ann remarked how flat Ohio was. Before coming home, they stopped to see their son, Joe, and family, and their son, Mike, and family. The Firsts have juncos, cardinals, and finches at their feeders this morning.

Pega and John Kennedy are home after spending two weeks at Virginia Beach, Virginia. They both came home with bronchitis but are better now. They will be opening the Wildwood Pastie Shop Friday, April 29.

Jackie and Dennie Rippett are home after a nice vacation in Florida.

Brian and Jeannie Rose spotted a sleek, fat, red fox by their garage this week. Maybe it's a female about to give birth.

Dave and I attended the Home and Garden Show at Little Bear East this past weekend. We saw so many people and had such nice visits and had a nice time catching up with news from the winter. Mark Spencer was sitting at the display of chemical toilets and paintings wearing a fur hat made from the skins of three different animals, with blue blinking eyes, no less. Mark is a trapper on Worth Road at Gypsy Rose Farms.

The Home and Garden Show was very good and informative and it gets better every year. It was great fun.

The spaghetti dinner held at Gros Cap School Thursday, April 14, was a big success, as always. We could have stayed all night talking to people. It was like old home week.

Friday night, April 15, was dinner at Miller's Camp for fish. We talked with Bill Amacher and Bill and Susie Ogle and Cheryl Matelski, which leads me to wonder what she would do if someone sat at her table before she got there? We said hello to Kathy Sliva and Mike Doud, Mike and Nora Massey, and Doug and Dorene Ingalls and their son, Jackson. What a charmer Jackson is. Rick Ledy and his wife were with them.

Dot Glashaw is spending most of her time cleaning up her yard and cutting down trees before she gets back to work. She attended the Home and Garden Show at Little Bear East and the craft show at St. Ignace Middle School this past weekend.

Get well wishes go out to Charlie Lamoreaux of Pte. Aux Chenes.

Our nephew, Joey Berry of Traverse City, just returned from a choir competition in Toronto. Joey has been participating in the North West Children's Choir at Northwestern Michigan College for six years. This event was an international competition. Three groups were from Canada. The choir Joey sings in was the youngest, comprised of 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. The Northwest Michigan Children's Choir won the gold trophy. It's more than three feet tall and will be displayed at the college in Traverse City. The group did some sightseeing and went to a play, "Mama Mia," which the group thoroughly enjoyed. The choir was gone for four days. Deb and Joey Barry chaperoned. Joey is the grandson of Marilyn and Roy DuMond of Traverse City. Congratulations to Joey and the rest of the singers. You did good.

Now, if you're ready, another little story of Alabama. Dick and Jean Bentley and Dave and I drove to Dauphin Island to visit with Mike and Barb Lehto, who park their motor home in a lovely R.V. park. Lunch was served. Mike fried up some freshly-caught fish and Barb fixed potato salad and strawberry shortcake for dessert. After a little talking, Mike said to the guys, "Let's go catch a bucket of fish."

There's a little dock near the campgrounds where one can fish, if in possession of a fishing license, which Dick was and Dave wasn't. So, Dave had the landing net to scoop those fish onto the dock. It wasn't long before that bucket was full, but not before someone tried to ease in to Mike's spot. Mike told the fellow that he, Mike, was fishing there and that he, the interloper, would have to move on.

Now, you who know Mike Lehto have to know that man did not argue. In the course of the time they were there, Mike advised a young boy what he was doing wrong and gave the boy his pole and the proper bait. The boy caught fish after that. Isn't that typical of Mike?

In the meantime, Barb, Jean, and I took the black lab, Axel, for a walk along a trail behind the park that ended up at the beach. It was a lovely day.

The day we came home, Friday, April 1, we had a terrible storm, as I reported last week. Dauphin Island had the same storm system and it literally flooded Barb's and Mike's park. There was water up almost past the wheels on the motor home. I understand there were kayaks and canoes paddling around the park afterward. Barb and Mike are safely home now and we probably have more stories to tell.

Happy birthday to Roy DuMond April 26.

Happy anniversary to Greg and Dawn Mitchenson of Williamston and of the Reverend's Retreat on Worth Road.

Take care, I'm out of here.

P.S. To all who inquired about my health, I am so improved. Feel great and thanks for your concern.
