Local Conservation District Tree Sale Starting April 22 and 23

2005-04-20 / News

The Chippewa/East Mackinac Conservation District will hold its annual tree sale Friday, April 22, and Saturday, April 23. People who have ordered trees or plants can pick up orders on those days. A limited number of trees and plants will be available to people who have not placed early orders.

The district offers native and non-native trees, shrubs, seeds, and equipment rental for affordable prices. Trees, shrubs, and seeds are compatible with the soil and temperature conditions of the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Some of the coniferous trees offered in the sale include sapling pines, fir, and spruce. The trees are two to three years of age. Wildlife packets offer a variety of eight different shrubs, bundled in "lowland" and "upland" sets that are suitable for each habitat. Some of the deciduous trees offered include paper birch, black cherry, red maple, sugar maple, mountain ash, and white oak.

Larger Norway, white, and blue spruce transplants are also available, as are "wildlife thickets," a clump of maple, hawthorn, wild berry, and spruce trees. Apple trees can be purchased in sets of four different species, including Honey Crisp, Lucky Jon, Macoun, and Wolf River.

The District rents tree planting bars, a three-point hitch planter, aerator, and no-till drill. Equipment rentals can be arranged by calling the Conservation District.

Catalogs are available in the spring at the District office at 2847 Ashmun Street in Sault Ste. Marie.

Information can be obtained by calling the Conservation District at (906) 635-1278.
