Mackinaw City Diamond Teams Gear Toward Season
Mackinaw City’s 2005 Baseball Team includes Head Coach Steve Balyo, Assistant Coach Aaron Grant, and players Chase Closs, Eric Teysen, Dan Sefton, Barry Paquet, Dane Curth, Jack Alexander, Blaine Paquet, Philip Gilman, Logan Paquet, Jeremy Hingston, Austin Martin, Matt Alexander, Seth Strong, Klaus Jaggi, and Clinton Weatherwax.
Softball: Seniors dominate the Lady Comets, led by Laura Martin in the infield, Meredith Neuman on the mound, Kourtney Milne in the infield, and Misty Rose and Virginia Alexander in the outfield.

The eight juniors and sophomores (four each) include Betsie Frye behind the plate, Callan Martin in the outfield, Kristen Darrow on the mound and infield, Erin Sullivan in the infield and on the mound, Bethany Campbell and Noelle Clemens in the infield, and Katie Smydra and Renee Yax in the outfield, while freshmen Julie Alexander in the outfield and eighth grader Caitlin Spencley on the mound and infield round out the squad.
Baseball: Seniors Seth Strong in the outfield and Philip Gilman behind the plate will play on the diamond for the final time, with juniors Eric Teysen, a unique pitcher who can bring the heat from both sides, Dane Curth, Matt Alexander, and Dan Sefton in the infield, and Jeremy Hingston and Blaine Paquet in the outfield.
Sophomores include Chase Closs and Jack Alexander in the infield and Clinton Weatherwax in the outfield, freshmen Logan Paquet on the mound and infield, Austin Martin in the outfield and on the mound, Klaus Jaggi in the outfield, and Barry Paquet in the infield.
Lady Comets Sweep Hornets, Indians; Coach Downing Reaches 300th Career Win
The Lady Comets swept Pellston 7-4 and 17-13 and Newberry 11-3 and 12-2 during softball, and after the doubleheader win over the Hornets, Coach Bob Downing reached a milestone with his 300th career win.
Meredith Neuman picked up the win in the opener against the Hornets with five strikeouts, while Betsie Frye, Katie Smydra, and Laura Martin recorded two hits each. Virginia Alexander, Kristen Darrow, Caitlin Spencley, and Neuman notched one hit apiece.
Bethany Campbell, Betsie Frye, Caitlin Spencley, and Erin Sullivan tallied three hits for the Comets in the nightcap, while Meredith Neuman, Virginia Alexander, and Laura Martin marked two hits. Katie Smydra, Misty Rose, and Kourtney Milne added one hit each and Sullivan picked up the win in relief.
During the doubleheader win over Newberry, Betsie Frye registered three hits, Laura Martin, Virginia Alexander, and Meredith Neuman chipped in two hits, and Callan Martin, Kourtney Milne, and Katie Smydra notched one hit. Sullivan earned the win on the mound with eight strikeouts.
In the second game, Betsie Frye notched a home run and Erin Sullivan tallied three hits, Laura Martin counted two hits, and Meredith Neuman, Virginia Alexander, and Bethany Campbell each added one hit.
Comets Split Baseball Twinbills
Mackinaw City baseball team split the two doubleheaders with Pellston and Newberry during the first week of the 2005 season.
The Comets defeated the Hornets 17-8 as Chase Closs led the Comets with four hits, three RBI's, and scored two runs. Philip Gilman added three hits, four RBI's, and scored one run. Logan Paquet chipped in two hits, one RBI, and scored four runs. Seth Strong tallied two hits, two RBI's, and scored one run. Dan Sefton marked two hits and scored two runs, and Blaine Paquet, Eric Teysen, and Jack Alexander each notched one hit.
In the second game, the Comets fell 10-1 as Dan Sefton recorded one hit and scored one run, and Philip Gilman and Eric Teysen each counted one hit.
During the twinbill against Newberry, the Comets lost the first game 2-1, but came back to down the Indians 10-4 in the nightcap.
Blaine Paquet recorded two hits and scored one run and Philip Gilman and Eric Teysen chipped in one hit in the setback, while in the second game Seth Strong tallied three hits, two RBI's, and scored three runs; Blaine Paquet chipped in two hits, two RBI's, and scored three runs; Logan Paquet tallied two hits and scored two runs; Chase Closs notched one hit and scored one run; Dan Sefton charted one hit and two RBI's; and Philip Gilman marked two hits, two RBI's, and scored one run.
