Lady Saints Third, Boys Fourth at Newberry
Aaron Gutchess was second in the pole vault for LaSalle.
St. Ignace girls finished third and the boys took fourth while senior Katie Spencer set a new LaSalle High School record in the shot put during the Newberry Invitational Thursday, April 28.
Cheboygan won the girls meet with 175 points, while Manistique took second with 166, the Lady Saints 79, Newberry 61, and Rudyard 32.
The Chiefs made it a clean sweep with the boys title after scoring 165 points, followed by the host Indians with 162, Manistique 89, the Saints 81, and Rudyard 56.
Lady Saints: Katie Spencer’s throw of 119'7.5" set a new school record in the discus and she placed fourth in the shot put to lead St. Ignace, while Kelsey Cryderman took second in the long jump and 200 dash, and the 800 relay team finished second.
Ashley St. Louis placed third in the 200 and 400 dashes. The 400 relay foursome took third. Jessica Massaway took fourth in the pole vault. The 3200 relay team finished fourth. Finishing fifth was Stacee Schnicke in the low hurdles, Emily Swirsky in the high jump, and Jaimee Bloxsom in the pole vault. Erica Ahlich was sixth in the pole vault.
Boys: Senior Aaron Gutchess and sophomore Derrick Clark led the Saints as Gutchess finished second in the pole vault, third in the long jump, and sixth in the 100 dash and Clark took second in the high hurdles, third in the pole vault, and fifth in the low hurdles.
The Saints 800 and 3200 relay teams finished third; Paul Davis fourth in the low hurdles and fifth in the pole vault; Rand Litzner fourth in the discus and sixth in the shot put; Garrett Becker fourth in the high jump; Don McLeod fourth in the 3200 run, and the 400 and 1600-relay foursomes took fourth.
Pat Springsteen finished fifth in the 800 and 1600 runs; Kody King fifth in the 3200 and sixth in the 1600; Mario Calcaterra fifth in the long jump; James Sayles sixth in the discus, and Stephen Massaway sixth in the 800.
