Katie Spencer fell four inches short of tying the 12-year-old LaSalle High School (LHS) discus record of 114' 1" with a toss of 113' 9" at Boyne City Wednesday, April 20.

The senior and defending Upper Peninsula state champion left no doubt about the LHS record with a throw of 119' 7.5" at the Newberry Invitational Thursday, April 28, to shatter the mark set by Sandra Brattge in 1993.

During invitational competition each athlete will get three throws in the first round and three in the finals. After each toss a spotter will mark the spot where the discus first hits, and after the third attempt each throw is measured.

The first attempt was measured at 119 that gave Spencer the record, but after the second throw was counted the school record was increased to 119' 7.5." That was good for first place during the invitational and added a fourth place in the shot put.

"I felt the throws were very good, but wasn't aware of the record until after they measured," said Spencer. "Breaking the school record was a goal from last season after winning the U.P. Finals, but now I must live up to the standards and continue to improve. We have some key meets during the remainder of the season that include the St. Ignace Kiwanis Invitational, SAC Meet at Cheboygan, Division II regionals at home, Meet of Champions at home, and the U.P. Finals."

"I am very happy that Katie broke the record," said Saints Coach Diane Huskey. "She has worked hard during her four-year career to achieve this mark and will continue to improve as the season goes on."
