  • St. Ignace girls track team posted five first places to lift the Lady Saints to the championship of the Fourth Annual Web Morrison Track and Field Invitational Saturday, April 30, in Pickford.
  • Kelsey Cryderman led the Black and Gold with victories in the 200 dash in 28.68 and long jump with a leap of 14' 6.” Katie Spencer won the discus with a throw of 117' 6" and placed third in the shot. The 400-relay team of Ashley St. Louis, Caysey Brown, Stacee Schnicke, and Cryderman won in 57.24, and the 800 foursome of Whitney Robinson, Schnicke, Brown, and Cryderman finished first with a time of 1:59.21.

The Lady Saints recorded 91 points in the field of 11 teams, followed by Pickford with 71.75, Rogers City 71, Cedarville 63.75, Brimley 47, Powers-North Central 36, DeTour 35.75, Bloomingdale 32, Engadine 27.75, Rudyard 26, and Newberry 22.

    Three girls placed for St. Ignace in the pole vault event. Jaimee Bloxsom finished second and Erica Ahlich and Jodie Langstaff tied for third.

    Ashley St. Louis placed fourth in the 200 and high jump and fifth in the 400, and Stacee Schnicke took fourth in the low hurdles and, in her first attempt, took fifth in the long jump.

    "The victory was a pleasant surprise," said Saints Coach Diane Huskey. "It was a total team effort."

    Bloomingdale High School in southwestern Michigan, coached by former Pickford alumnus Shon Cottle, made the long trip to compete in the Web Morrison Invitational.     Veronica Morrison finished fourth in the long jump; Renae Reich took fifth in the high jump; Courtney Bruni sixth in the low hurdles; and the Pickford 400 relay team took second, and the 800 and 1600 foursomes placed third.

    Lady Trojans: Marcie Mason won the high jump with a mark of 4' 6" and the 3200-relay team of Lindsey McLeod, Katie Bowlby, Emily Feldhake, and Lauren Izzard continue to capture first places to lead the Green and White.

    Elizabeth Reno finished second in the discus and Lauren Izzard second in the 800; Shayna Rohrer third in the discus; Lindsey McLeod fourth in the 400; Megan Hill fourth in the high hurdles; Caitlin Wright fifth in the low hurdles; Kara Griffin sixth in the 3200; 1600 relay team took second; 800 foursome placed fifth, and the 400 group finished sixth.

    Lady Bays: Molly McIntyre led Blue and White with a first place in the high jump at 4' 6;” Katey Kingsbury second in the 400 and third in the 800; Miranda Rosseau fifth in the high hurdles; Amber Aikens sixth in the 200; the 800 relay team took second, and the 400 foursome placed third.

    Lady Raiders: Liz Lehman finished second in the high hurdles and third in the low hurdles to lead the Red and White, while Christina Stocking placed fifth in the high jump and sixth in the high hurdles, Amber Burton sixth in the 1600, Anne Goetz sixth in the 400, and the 400 relay team took fourth.

    Lady Eagles: Elicia Derusha placed second in the 1600; Shauni Rutledge fourth in the shot put and fifth in the high jump; Rose Paquin sixth in the shot; and the 3200 relay team finished third, 1600 foursome fourth, and 400 group took fifth for the Green and Gold.

    Lady Bulldogs: Brenda Burby won the shot put with a toss of 35' 0" and placed fourth in the discus. Charlotte Folkersma finished third in the 3200 to lead the Black and Orange.

    Newberry Boys Win Track Title

    Newberry boys won seven events to win the boys title with 138 points, followed by Powers-North Central with 106, St. Ignace 67, Pickford 64, Brimley 40, Engadine 38, Cedarville 34, Rogers City 21, and Rudyard 19.

    St. Ignace: Aaron Gutchess won the pole vault with a height of 12' 6", took second in the long jump, and fourth in the high jump. Rand Litzner tossed the shot put a personal best 141' 0" to finish first and lead the Saints.

    Mike Syrjala finished fourth in the 1600 and 3200 runs; Paul Davis fourth in the low hurdles and 200 dash; Garrett Becker fifth in the high jump; Derick Clark fifth in the pole vault; Pat Springsteen sixth in the 800; and the Saints 800 relay team took fourth, 400 and 3200 took fifth, and 1600 sixth.

    Pickford: Kip Cline finished second in the high jump and fifth in the low hurdles; Carl Morrison second in the 800 and sixth in the 1600; Chris Thompson third in the 400 and high jump; Tony King third in the low hurdles and fourth in the high hurdles; Tony Kibble sixth in the pole vault; the 3200-relay team took second, and the 400, 800, and 1600 foursomes finished fourth.

    Brimley: Josh Winkler won the shot put with a toss of 46' 4" and placed fifth in the discus to lead the Bays, while Jerrod Dillon finished third in the 200 and sixth in the 100, Ryan Freedman fourth in the 100, Jordan Dillon fifth in the high hurdles, the 800 relay team took second, and 400 group third.

    Engadine: Grayson Hood won the high hurdles in 16.74 and the low hurdles in 44.21 to lead the Eagles; Stefen Albright finished third in the long jump and fifth in the 100; Derick Weichlein fourth in the 800; the 800 and 1600 relay teams took fifth, and the 400 and 3200 sixth.

    Cedarville: Ryan Duman won the high jump with a mark of 6' 2" to lead the Trojans; Chad Schlosser third in the 3200; Jordan Sweeney fifth in the 800; Justin Baker sixth in the high and low hurdles; the 1600 and 3200 relay teams took third, and 800 foursome sixth.

    Rudyard: Mike Chantos finished third in the 100 and sixth in the 400; Travis Siegwart placed third in the pole vault; J.D. Hoolsema fifth in the 1600, and Isiah Otten fifth in the 3200.

    Invitational Briefs

    • Jerry Root, former Cedarville teacher and coach and sportswriter for The Weekly Wave, made the trip with his Powers-North Central teams. Before the game, he broadcasted live to Escanaba with Web Morrison and Chuck Bennin as his guests on the sports morning show.

    • Shon Cottle, 1992 graduate of Pickford, returned to his alma mater with his Bloomingdale girls track team to compete in the Web Morrison Invitational. The Cardinals are a Class C school and a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

    • Coach Shon Cottle was home visiting the week before the Pickford spring break and Panthers Coach Sam Lightfoot invited him and his Lady Cardinals to the event. The girls from Bloomingdale stayed with girls on the Lady Panthers track team.

    • Athletic Director Chuck Bennin and more than 30 volunteers hosted the meet.
