We’re having a heat wave. About time, wouldn’t you say? But I’m sure before long I will complain as loudly as I do when it’s so very cold in the winter.
Good friends, good food, good music, and a family to fill the house with love. That was the order of the day Saturday, June 11, as cars parked up and down Hiawatha Trail indicating the number of folks offering their congratulations to Buster and Pauline Peters on their golden wedding anniversary. Among the many areas represented were folks from St. Ignace, Trout Lake, Newberry, Dick and Barb Todd from Ludington, Don, June, and Susie Ward of Battle Creek, Pauline’s brother and sister-in-law, George and Kay Therrian of Bay City, John Johnson of Cheboygan, John Graham of Sault Ste. Marie, Ted, Paul, Lou, Vern, and Vi Couton, also of Sault Ste. Marie, and Dan and Judy Cerveny of Owosso, as well as longtime friends from our tiny towns.
We enjoyed a short visit to Durand over the weekend, arriving by shuttle courtesy of Leon and Andrea Everhart who, along with Martha Everhart, surprised Leon’s sister and my high school best friend, Kathy Everhart Drury, on the occasion of her 60th birthday. We wondered aloud how we got from 18 to 60 so fast. Beats me.
We also enjoyed breakfast the next morning, courtesy of the Drurys, and caught up as much as we could with family news, which meant a lot, as we only see one another once a year.
Within the next few weeks, work on the outside of the Rexton Mennonite Church will increase dramatically as an old-fashioned work bee will get underway. Folks from Indiana and possibly a few downstate churches will converge to replace the siding on the church, which was moved to the area in 1950. A lot of changes have taken place through the years and this one will put a whole new look to the building. So, it’s “have hammer, will travel.”
Maryana Tucker enjoyed a few days’ visit with her friend and former coworker, Evelyn Burgess and family.
Continued speedy recovery to Mary Hart, who spent a few days in the Helen Newberry Hospital. Also, condolences to Mary on the passing of her cousin.
Pastor Tim and Kathy Miller delivered another daughter to the comfort of Grama’s home for the summer, before starting her summer job and then school in the fall.
