August is here and it came in with a boom. We could go without the thunder and lightning, but the well-needed rain was definitely welcome.

The Community Schools will offer swimming lessons starting Monday, August 8, in the pool at the Park-A-Way Motel. To enroll, or for more information, call (906) 293-3282.

The Curtis Community Ladies Aid reminds Portage Township property owners to submit their landscaping projects for the 2005 summer beautification contest. Prizes will be awarded after Labor Day. Applications are available at Curtis area businesses.

The Luce-Mackinac Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, August 4, at 1:30 p.m. in the Luce County Historical Society Building on West Harrie Street in Newberry.

The Engadine VFW will have a fish fry, Friday, August 5, from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the post in Engadine. The cost is $8 for adults, $3 for children younger than 12, and free for kids younger than 5.
