Welcome to the month of August. One realizes summer is drawing to a close when school supplies are being advertised. But it is still summer and we have a whole lot of summer time living to do, so enjoy.

The Salmon Derby is well underway, with 205 hopeful fishermen registered. As of this writing, the largest salmon, caught by Roger Scales of Pickford, weighs 26.87 pounds. Dawn Johnson from Marquette caught a salmon weighing 21.84 pounds. The figures change every day. Good luck to all of the avid fishermen: May today be the day they catch “the big one.”

Everyone in the area is enjoying having the bands at the DeTour Marina on Saturday nights. This coming Saturday is the last time there will be a band, so come out and enjoy the music. The attendance has been wonderful.

On Saturdays there has been an Open Fresh Air Market under the tent at the marina. There are local vendors with wares to please everyone. They will be open again this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Fifth Annual Bob-O Classic will be Saturday, September 3, at The Rock. Tee time is 10 a.m. To sign up, call either The Rock or Alex and Linda Fisher. Linda Fisher may be contacted during the day at (906) 297-5471. Donations are also accepted.

If you missed seeing the stage play of “My Fair Lady” this weekend you missed a wonderful performance. The very talented cast was extremely professional in their acting, choreography, and singing, not to mention the director and members of the orchestra. We are grateful to the Les Cheneaux Education Foundation for bringing us outstanding plays in summer theater.

The DeTour Village Council met July 18 with the following excerps, provided by Village Clerk Linda Fisher.

The Maple Street closure, brought before Council by the Schopp family, has been tabled for the August meeting, awaiting information from the village attorney. Bud Schopp has informed the Council that the plotted Tahney Street runs across part of his lot on Sims Street and Council has given the go-ahead to reroute the street to its original location.

A representative from Wade-Trim will obtain information of costs from Dick Newland on the designation of changing some Village streets to major streets. Since the state has already submitted its reports for this fiscal year, the transition will have to be submitted in 2006.

George Newell brought to the attention of Council certain properties on Sims Street that are encroaching on the Village road right of way. The Zoning Board has been instructed to send letters to the individual owners, advising them of the imposition.

A bit of trivia: Did you know that crocodiles swallow stones to help them dive deeper, and giraffes are incapable of coughing?
