We certainly can't complain about not having a summer this year. It really has been summer weather, but with a small quantity of rain. Some days have been so hot that it was not comfortable to be outdoors. Thank goodness for air conditioners.

The Hiawatha Sportsman's Club’s Arts, Crafts, and Hobby Show will take place Sunday, August 7, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club Activities Building. The show will include oil and watercolor paints, photography, needlework, collections, fly-tying, quilting, and basketry. This show is free and the public is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

This year’s featured artist, Howard Yost, who is a retired school principal, is a many faceted artist. In Mr. Yost's 20 years of retirement, he has also worked in antique boat models and oil paintings.

Exhibitors are limited to Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club members, spouses, and minor children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren. For more information, call (906) 477-6583.

Paula Ramelis does a lot of hard work with the Mackinac 4-H Club. They recently held a session in Curtis, teaching the craft of fly-tying to six area children. They learned the art of making "Wooly Worms." They’ve been holding sessions in Curtis, Newton Township, and surrounding towns and this was the third of a six-week "Thursday Special." Thursday, July 28, they held "Sports Day" in Rexton, with activities that included cheerleading, golf, and a baseball game. If you would like to join the fun, or volunteer your time to help, please call Mrs. Ramelis at (906) 477-6390.

The Centennial Celebration for Curtis is coming up fast. The dedication is planned for Friday, September 2, at 7 p.m. during the all-class reunion and music festivities at Curtis Park.

Representatives of families who have been in the area for the last 100 years will be asked to help dedicate a plaque. Plesscher Nursery is donating a huge rock on which the plaque will be mounted for all future generations to see. The centennial committee is looking for volunteers to man the Historical Society Building each week until the celebration. The official centennial buttons are still available and will provide access to all centennial weekend events.

The committee members are also searching for organizations and individual food vendors for Friday and Sunday during the celebration. If you’re interested and can help in any way, please call (906) 586-3667.

The Naubinway-Engadine Merchants Association "Fall Festival" will be Saturday, September 10, at the Naubinway Pavilion. Tables are available at $15 each. This year’s recipe contest will feature peaches. They will also hold an auction of the "Fish Art," which has been hanging around town.

The Portage Players of Curtis are presenting a play, "The Ransom of Red Chief," an O'Henry story adapted by Anne Coulter Martins.

This event will be at the Curtis Park in the Tent Theater Thursday, August 11, Friday, August 12, and Saturday, August 13, at 8 p.m. each day. Tickets will be on sale soon. For more information, call the Curtis Chamber of Commerce at (906) 586-3700. There is still lots of fun and lots of events left before the end of summer.

Stay safe and stay well. See you next week.
