There are some fun events coming up to round out the end of summer vacation for everyone.
The 4-H is sending out an invitation to anyone who is interested to join them for a cookout Thursday, August 11, at 6 p.m. at the Mill Pond in Engadine. 4-H will bring the hamburgers, hot dogs, juice, plates, and tableware. Anyone interested in joining them is asked to bring a side dish to pass.
Respond to Paula Ramelis at (906) 477-6390 if you’d like to attend. You may also e-mail Paula at ramelis@msu.edu.
If you’re looking for fun for the kids for their summer vacation, then why not join Susan Fosdick at Engadine United Methodist Church’s Vacation Bible School, which will be Monday, August 22, through Friday, August 26. When it comes to having fun, Susan is the number one teacher. She is asking children in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades to join them on "Lava Lava Island" for a swinging good time.
Registration is from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday, August 22. For more information, or for transportation, you may call (906) 477-6766. The "monkeys" hope to see you there.
The "Senior Swingers" are at the Manistique Senior Center on Wednesdays. They’re inviting everyone to join them in some music.
Engadine Preschool is accepting applications for the 2005-2006 school year. Children must be four years old on or before December 1. Call Diane Miller at (906) 477-6505 for an enrollment packet.
Other upcoming events are the Luce/West Mackinac County Fair in Newberry Thursday, August 25, through Sunday, August 28; Lumberjack Days at the Tahquamenon Logging Museum Saturday, August 27, and Sunday, August 28; and the Original Michigan Fiddlers Jamboree Saturday, September 24, from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the American Legion in Newberry. The fiddlers play until about 4 p.m. then take a break for dinner, then they return for square dancing in the evening. It’s a really great day of music and entertainment.
A variety of programs, activities, and exhibits, based on art, wildlife, and conservation, is available at the Seney Wildlife Refuge in August with the Junior Duck Stamp Art Display Monday, August 15, through Monday, August 22, and the Federal Duck Stamp Art Display Thursday, August 18, through Monday, August 22. Artwork will be on display at the Visitor Center showing exhibition of original art in the national contest that produced the federal duck stamp and since 1993 a junior artist postage stamp. The Refuge Visitor Center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
An update for our out-of-town readers: The terrible humidity that we had been experiencing has finally slacked off. Of course, the storm we had, which took much of the humidity away, we didn’t really enjoy.
It did give us some badly needed rain for the gardens and lawns and cooled the air. I guess we can't have it both ways. Time is moving up fast when we will be complaining about the cold air again. Enjoy the nice weather we have left.
Nine Engadine High School students assisted the Engadine-Naubinway Lions Club at the Fourth of July games. The students listed below each donated several hours of work under the hot Fourth of July sun to insure the little kids had a good time. The students were Katie Biang, Whitney Frazier, Katie Hobbs, Elisa Hobbs, Katie Rutledge, Shannon Browning, Carrie Sadler, Lauren MacArthur, and Phillip Hood. Joining them, from Colorado, was Julie Crocker, a cousin of the Hobbs family. Paula Ramelis was the coordinator of the volunteers. The Lions Club believes it would be great to have these volunteers again in 2006.
Happy birthday to Shane Baker August 12, LeAnn Gribbell August 15, Jesse Fosdick August 16, and Andrea Everhart August 17.
Happy anniversary wishes to Brian and Cheryl Adams August 14 and LeRoy and Jane Stefanich August 18. Congratulations to all of you, hope you have a great day.
Stay safe and stay well. See you next week.
