Brevort By Lois Movalson

It’s a good summer for bats. We’ve had a family in residence between the attic walls until it finally must have gotten so hot they vacated the premises, as we don’t hear them scratching around while leaving and returning. Once in awhile one will find its way into the house, specifically our bedroom late at night. We just opened the slider and it flew out into the dark night. The next evening a smaller bat circled the living room and we assume it’s still hiding somewhere, as we didn’t net it and there weren’t any open windows or doors for it to leave by.
Mary Carney, at the First Edition Bookstore, has cleared an area in her backyard as to put up a big bat house that is being built by Jackie and Jim Rogers. She says she will feel more comfortable when they have their own home rather than hers.
Mary has been busy this summer with her rug weaving demonstrations. Last week she was in Cedarville and was pleased by the good attendance.
Roger and Betty Ostling, friends of Mary Carney, have moved a new trailer on to the lot behind the bookstore. The Ostlings are from Ludington and use the “way up north” trailer as their summer getaway.
Shawne and Rob Brackett, Mary Carney’s daughter and son-in-law, of Grand Rapids, are the proud owners of a Harley Davidson and, of course, are on their way to Sturgis, South Dakota, for the big Harley rally. Last year they did all the Civil War battlefields.
Dave and I enjoy (to a point) our faux pas as well as anyone. Sunday we decided to go to Hessel to see the antique boats. Oops. Wrong weekend. We did eat lunch there, and we thought when we started out it was probably going to be crowded. Wrong again. We did see Bob and Molly Boynton and George and Barbara Yshinski. So we did see their boats in the marina. Not exactly the antiques we anticipated, but really nice boats. It was a nice day.
Karley Shattuck, of Drummond Island, was staying with her grandparents, the Dave Moons, of Ozark Road this week. She set up a nice lemonade stand in the shade in the front yard. We stopped, and found out Karley is saving money for a horse. Silly me. I thought perhaps it was money for school stuff. Two visitors from the Netherlands, who are staying in the area, were hiking by and also stopped by to purchase some refreshments.
The Chalmers’ home was a buzz with visiting friends and relatives from the Birmingham area. Sharon’s sister, Andrea Gerault, and her children, Victor and Diana, Jared Michael, along with a niece, Lindsey Ellis, and her husband, T.J., and the Chalmers’ daughter, Lisa. There was golfing on Saturday and in the evening they ended up at the casino and participated in karaoke. Diana and Victor brought the house down. They’re both excellent vocalists. Victor does a very good imitation of Frank Sinatra.
Please keep John Gibb in your prayers as he struggles with cancer. John and Linda own the Chapel Hill Motel here in the village.
Get well wishes to Sally Conklin as she recovers from a successful hip replacement surgery.
Ann Wright and friends of Greenville were guests of Jim and Ann Dyer last week. The ladies journeyed to Canada. They had no problem going over, but encountered long lines coming back into the states.
A few weeks ago, Betty Giordani took four of her co-workers, young Thai students, on a shopping trip to Petoskey. It was a very enjoyable time for the girls. They had dinner at a local Chinese eatery.
Beatrice and John Zak left for Painesville, Ohio, after a great vacation here in the village. Bea is a native Brevorter, the daughter of Ted and Ethelyn Gustafson.
Levi Rogers had just the best time at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp this past week. He learned to swim, even underwater, and he can do the dog paddle.
The Rogers household was busy Sunday with relatives from Pellston.
Thora and Jack Shepard were in Mio this past weekend to attend the Amish-Mennonite Quilt Show.
Family members gathered at the home of Mildred Gustafson Friday, August 5, to celebrate her 91st birthday.
Ken Gilmore is renovating the “Welcome to Brevort” signs that are at each end of the village. Each business owner is to donate to the cost of the renovating. Mark Spencer is heading up the project.
Mark and Brenda Spencer’s son and daughter-in-law, Mark Scott and Tara Spencer, of Redford, were visiting this past weekend.
Tracy Movalson is home from De Pere, Wisconsin, for a few days.
We entertained Lee Quigley and Lorie and Joe Stewart at dinner at our home Monday evening. We enjoyed some of the walleye our son, Eric, sent home with us.
Joe Stewart left for Fort Myers, Florida, Saturday evening. He will return next week.
Lee Quigley has been entertaining company practically all summer and she loves being a hostess. Friends from Finland, Terry Barlan and sons, Robert and Nick were guests last week. Sunday the Healy family, headed by Lucy Healy, celebrated anniversaries at the Quigley home on Lake Michigan. There was a first anniversary, a 48 year anniversary and one other, totaling 78 years of wedded bliss for the Healy family. It was a lovely day with swimming and plain old lounging in the shade.
Dr. Greg and Dawn Mitchinson and family were at the Rev’s Retreat on Worth Road this week. Greg showed up at our door Friday morning with blueberry muffins, hot out of the oven with blueberries fresh from the woods.
Charlie Movalson and Andy Movalson (the prospective groom) were at the Charlie Movalson cottage on Lake Michigan this week. They did some fishing and beach walking, probably contemplating the upcoming nuptials on August 20.
Cousins from St. Louis, Missouri, and Traverse City, were guests of Owen and Barbara Jorgenson this week. Tracy Movalson dropped by for a visit also. Matt and Melissa Jorgenson are spending a few days with the grandparents while the rest of the family, Mike, Melanie, and Mark, along with the collie, Colby, are on the boat in the marina in the city. Owen has been busy clearing a place in the back of their property for pitching a tent and camping out for the family. Barb and Owen journeyed to Grand Rapids to celebrate their anniversary. Happy anniversary.
Dave, Tracy, and I dined at the home of Horst and Ingrid Daemmrich Friday evening. Ingrid always has a delicious German dish and we were not disappointed.
A belated birthday greeting to Lara Gustafson, whose birthday was July 27 and not August 27, as I thought.
Happy birthday to Mark Spencer August 12.
Happy 50th birthday to John Masiok August 13.
Happy anniversary to Mike and Lara Gustafson August 17.
Happy birthday to Clare Kalbfliesch and Claris Snyder August 17.
Happy birthday to Lee Quigley August 19.
