Rexton-Garnet By Linda Livermore

On your mark, get set, go! That was the feeling of the many folks who, after years of traveling on gravel and around plenty of curves, were able to enjoy the newly paved Borgstrom Road, which connects Mackinac and Luce counties, and is a shorter route for folks who work in the Newberry area and for those just going from US-2 to M-28.
For years it was just a “wouldn’t it be nice” project. A few years ago when Mick Hart became a member of the Hudson Township Board, his goal, as well as the other board members, was to realize the paving of Borgstrom Road. After much planning, fund searching, and cooperation with the Mackinac County Road Commission, the dream became a reality.
Although Mick passed away before it was finished, it would be nice to see the road be renamed in his honor for all his hard work and dedication to the project.
Hudson Township has a new supervisor, Allyn Garavaglia. He will assume his new duties next month. Al is a very familiar face in town as he and his wife, Nadine, live on the edge of town and Al’s family roots go way down deep in Rexton.
The new pavilion at the Hudson Township Park is a joint effort between the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and Hudson Township and is a nice addition to the park.
Enjoying the Michigan-Indiana relief sale held annually at Fairview were Darlene Shoemaker, Evelyn Selby, Esther Bigelow, and Mary Ellen Stephenson. The ladies, through the efforts of the sewing circle, contributed several baby quilts to the cause. While there, they enjoyed a short visit with former Pastor Joe Swartz and his wife Naomi, who recently re-located from Flint, where they had spent the winter following hospital stays. Under the watchful eyes of their sons, Denny and Lowell, they will now call Fairview home.
An organizational meeting for the area Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians elders from Naubinway, Gould City, Engadine, Rexton, Garnet, and Epoufette will be Wednesday, August 24, at 7 p.m. at the pavilion in Naubinway. Mark your calendars and bring your ideas to the meeting.
Among the many mourners at the memorial service for Mead Hart, I saw Sue Smith and her mom, Betty; Joe and Natalie Bethume; Dave, Darrin, and Cheryl Hart; and Clarence and Gladys Bumpas, along with their daughter, Wilma. Wilma, I understand, had the misfortune of having lightning strike close to her car, causing the whole electrical system to be ruined. As a result of this, her car had to be towed back to Escanaba.
