At last we are having some relief from the terribly hot and humid weather that has plagued the Eastern Upper Peninsula. With the 103 plus temperature showing on the thermometer at the First National Bank in Cedarville last week, it was visual proof of just how hot it was. More warm and humid weather is on the way for this week, but I’m sure it won’t reach the extremes of the last few weeks.
The weather we have been having must be ideal for the Queen Anne’s Lace this year. I have never seen it so abundant. Every roadside and field is filled with this beautiful, lacy weed. In some areas it almost looks as though it has been planted and it’s lovely to see.
The Boat Show weekend is on the horizon, and with it many gatherings and parties are scheduled. Among them is the Annual “After the Boat Show Artist Festival/Open House” at Creekside Herbs. This is always an interesting gathering with music, food, and lots of friends to see. Also on the agenda at Creekside will be a Watershed Fundraiser sponsored by the Artisans’ Cooperative. This will take place August 17 at 7 p.m. at Creekside, where they will auction off Randy Dunn’s frogs and other artists’ work.
We have received word of the recent death of Margaret Crawfis, who was 93 years of age. Margaret owned the Snows Bar from 1955 to 1973, when it first became famous for Margaret’s “Snowsburgers.” Margaret’s family is gathering information for a memoir and asks that if anyone has a special memory of Margaret and the old Snows Bar, please send them to her granddaughter, Margaret Schlump, at 28700 Armada Ride, Richmond, Michigan 48062.
We all hope for a warm and comfortable day for the Boat Show. It seems that there will once again be many beautiful, old, wooden crafts to be displayed and judged. The activities begin Friday evening at 5 p.m. with a pork barbecue at Mertaugh’s Boat Storage in Hessel, followed by a street dance with music by the “Beach Chickens” at the Hessel Marina.
The following day it all begins again at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast put on by the Lions Club. The gates open at 10 a.m. for the “Festival of Arts” and the boat display.
This huge craft show is always a big attraction and makes for interesting shopping along with the display of boats. We hope everyone has a happy and safe weekend. Enjoy!
