Here it is, almost the end of August. College students are headed off to their various destinations, many for the first time. It's a scary time for some, but once they become acclimated they usually love it. Say goodbye, moms and dads; the next time you see that freshman will probably not be until Thanksgiving vacation. Other schools, too, will soon be opening their doors and classes will begin. In fact, many have already started. Football and girls basketball practices have been going on for a couple of weeks.
A Wilderness Bay dockside dessert was held the Sunday evening of Boat Show weekend on the delightful new shore deck on Wilderness Bay on Marquette Island. The whole family was involved, including hand-delivered invitations by the Layher's four-year-old grandson, Oliver Layher. Friends and families from 13 cottages attended, with a total of 66 people. Gene Frye won the grand prize for having the most correct answers on the Wilderness Bay trivia and history quiz, having spent 75 summers on the island. Another prize was won for being the youngest member in attendance by their five-month-old granddaughter, Anna Layher.
The families attending were from the Frye, Falor, Sheppard, Neulson, Brockman, Dewitt, T. Layher, B. Layher, Henricks, Malcolm, Lewis, Bauer, and Strehler cottages. It is planned to be an annual affair.
We send birthday greetings to the mother of Bonnie Lahyer. Bernice Toll Creque will celebrate her 90th birthday September 6. Bernice started coming to Wilderness Bay in 1915 when her father, Emil Toll, built a cottage there for his family to enjoy. The healthy air and good fishing were an enticement. Bernice is now a resident of Barefoot Bay, Florida, but the cottage is still enjoyed by her daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Bill Layher and their family.
