Gardening, Livestock, Fine Arts Entries Highlight Chippewa County Fair

Activities Planned From Aug. 28 to Sept. 5

Chippewa County Fair in Kinross will open Sunday, August 28, and continue through Monday, September 5. Held at the Chippewa County Fairgrounds, it is the largest of the Eastern Upper Peninsula fairs, drawing thousands of spectators and entries from both Chippewa and Mackinac counties.

The nine-day event is a culmination of a year’s worth of work for many entrants, including 4-H, gardening, livestock, fine arts, and canning.

Open exhibits will be in the 4-H building on the fairgrounds.

Pony rides and Bingo will be available each day of the fair. Antique equipment demonstrations will be provided by the Eastern Upper Peninsula Antique Equipment Association Saturday, September 3, Sunday, September 4, and Monday, September 5.

Kandu and Company Magic show, starring Jef Eaton as Kandu the Magician, will hold four shows daily, August 31 through September 5, with show times posted on the fair stage clock.

The fair will open Sunday, August 28, at 10 a.m., with poultry entries. Rabbit entries must come in after noon. The Miss Chippewa County Fair Talent Contest will be at 7 p.m. at the 4-H building. The winner of that contest will be introduced as the presiding Miss Chippewa County Fair Wednesday, August 31, at 7:30 p.m. before the demolition derby.

Rabbit judging will open the activities for Monday, August 30, at 9 a.m., followed by market livestock entries from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., pocket pet judging at 2 p.m., and Go Kart races at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday’s events will begin with poultry judging at 9 a.m., followed by breeding livestock entries and the thumb tractor and truck pull.

Wednesday’s events will begin at 9 a.m., with swine judging, followed by youth and open exhibits, sheep judging, and the Demolition Derby.

Beef judging will open Thursday’s events at 9 a.m., followed by open and youth exhibit judging from 9 a.m. to noon, a dog show, youth horse trail and speed classes, and a truck pull at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s events will begin with the youth horse show at 9 a.m. in the arena, followed by dairy judging, goat judging, a garden tractor pull, the master stockman competition, farm stock tractor pull, harness horse racing, and music by Rich Eddy’s Rockin’ Oldies Band at 7:30 p.m. Admission to the concert is $2 per person and $5 per family.

Saturday activities will begin with the draft horse show at 9 a.m., followed by the annual market livestock buyer’s dinner, garden tractor pull, Lions Club steak fry, and the market livestock sale. The day’s grandstand events include harness horse racing, an antique tractor parade, and mud runs.

Sunday will begin with an open horse show at 8 a.m. in the arena, followed by lightweight horse team weigh-in, a garden tractor pull, the “sheep to shawl” demonstration, a talent show, chili cook off, an antique and classic tractor pull, and Tri-County Speed horse contest. Senior citizens activities will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon, and an open microphone talent show will begin at 1 p.m. at the pavilion. Sunday’s grandstand events include worship services at 9 a.m., followed by a pony pull, lightweight and heavyweight horse pulls, and gospel music. Donations from the gospel performance will benefit United Way.

Monday, September 5, will start with a car show in front of the 4-H building at 10 a.m., followed by a chicken barbecue, garden tractor pull, “Pedal Pusher” pull, and release of open and youth exhibits at 2 p.m. Harness racing will be at 12:30 p.m. in the grandstand, featuring Fedelle Fauri Futurity.
