Curtis Historical Society Re-opens Until Labor Day

The doors to the Curtis Historical Society have re-opened after being closed for most of the summer. The historical society building will be open for the rest of the summer, including during the Curtis Centennial Celebration Friday, September 2, to Sunday, September 4.

Open hours for the Curtis Historical Society will be the same as the Portage Township Public Library, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. each Monday, Thursday, and Friday, until at least Labor Day weekend. The building is next to the library.

Lucille Kenyon, a volunteer and secretary for the Luce-Mackinac Genealogy Society, said the Curtis Historical Society allows visitors to browse through a collection of old newspaper clippings of obituaries, weddings, and events in Curtis.

There are scrapbooks of photographs, and area items such as resort brochures and postcards. The society has been collecting many donated museum artifacts that tell a tale about Curtis’ past.

The Curtis Historical Society has been in limbo since the death of Shirley Burns in 2002. She did a lot of work in creating and putting together exhibits and collecting donations and artifacts, said Ms. Kenyon. She had a membership list and collected annual dues.

Township Supervisor Donald Ferris has now taken over but, said Ms. Kenyon, the society is still on hold until it can be better organized. Until then, the building will be open at least for the remainder of the summer. Donations can be dropped off at the building during open hours.
