Marty Spencer will be wearing another cap for the athletic program at LaSalle High School as the Saints head football coach will take over as athletic director, replacing Rick Ledy, who retired after 16 years as the athletic director and more than 25 years in the school system as a teacher and coach.

"Rick left me in excellent shape to begin my first year," said Mr. Spencer. "The biggest adjustment will be time spending and learning the routine."

Coach Spencer begins his ninth season as head football coach and 18th year in the gridiron program, and is in his 10th season with the track teams. He also coached varsity basketball for five years.

"I feel the 18 years that I have been involved in athletics at LaSalle qualifies me for the job. I understand the competitiveness and tradition at St. Ignace," he said.

Mr. Spencer was graduated from Essexville-Garber High School in 1978 and is a 1982 alumnus of Alma College.

He moved to St. Ignace before the start of the 1987-88 school year to teach in the middle school and coach.

Coach Spencer will move to the high school and still teach eighth grade health, math, and physical education along with his athletic director job.

"Once I get to know the officials and fellow athletic directors, my job will be better. I will depend on help from the staff in the LaSalle High and Middle School," he said.

He and his wife, Angie, have two children, Katie, a freshman at Albion College, and Kyle, a sophomore at LaSalle High School.
