Joe Lavendar of Topinabee Takes Top Prize in Salmon Derby

Joe Lavender of Topinabee won $1,000 for a 16.28-pound salmon in the fourth annual Islander Bar Slammin’ Salmon fishing tournament Saturday, August 20. For winning the tournament, Mr. Lavender also received a gold pendant with the Slammin’ Salmon logo donated by Dave Schurman of Lake Orion.

Mr. Lavender and his crew also won another $100 for weighing in the heaviest group of fish. They caught a total of 72.08 pounds of fish.
The second place winner was the team of Dale Dunn and Scott DeWitt, both of Cedarville, for a 14.30-pound salmon. They received the $500 second place prize.
David Altmaier of Cedarville took third place and $400 for his 13.74-pound chinook.
Return angler Judy Gahn of Cheboygan won $300 for her fourth place fish weighing 12.74 pounds. Mrs. Gahn also won $50 for catching a fish that weighed the Mystery Weight.
Norm Perkins of Cedarville won $200 for his fifth place fish that weighed 12.58 pounds.
Jimmi Miller of Moran, who was fishing with Terry Johnston of Bliss, took home $50 for also catching a fish that weighed the Mystery Weight.
More than 30 boats took to the water in the rain Saturday morning. The skies cleared by the early afternoon. At the Islander Bar in Hessel, owner and sponsor Greg Bohn awarded the prizes to anglers.
