Brevort By Lois Movalson

It’s hard to pull away from watching the hurricane on the news. We know what Ivan did in Gulf Shores last year.
Pat Knight called to report a beaver sighting on the beach not too far from their home on Windowed Lane, overlooking Lake Michigan. Gordon Knight was on the beach early this morning doing his stretches when he spotted a relatively large black object on a rock nearby. He got his binoculars on it and it was a very large beaver sitting there preening himself. He slid off the rock and proceeded swimming east. Gordon thought he would have a ways to go before he found a river to navigate, thinking of the Brevort River.
Murray Chalmers has been a guest of his brother, Joe, and sister-in-law, Sharon, last week. Murray is supposed to report for a consulting job in Tuscaloosa, Mississippi, for two to four weeks.
Tom Coffey has been running his antique sale at his home on US-2 just west of the village. Taffy Coffey and Kurt Coffey have left for Owosso, as Kurt will be starting his work-study program at Baker College.
Jim and Ann Dyer joined eight couples at the home of Dottie Glashaw for a potluck dinner Sunday. The Dyers took in the fair at Newberry Saturday.
Eric and Kelli Movalson, along with Miss Amanda and her brother, Zach, are enjoying time at the cottage on the beach in the village. Eric and Kelli have visited with Pat and Patti McKee and Caroline McKee this week. Amanda and Zach played with Annie and Jane McKee on the beach. Eric and Kelli invited the McKee family to their cottage for lunch and time for grabbing some sun during the middle of the week. Saturday evening we all enjoyed a final cookout at the McKee cottage east of the sand mine. It was a good time, finishing up with s’mores, of course. Time goes so fast when you’re having a good time with stories and memories of when the McKee family came up years ago and the children came to the Marathon station and played with Davie and Tracy. Eric was way too young to remember.
Lara and Mike Gustafson and Kristi and Morgan attended the reception for Brent and Wendy Snyder at the Little Bear Conference center. Brent and Wendy were married in Las Vegas in April of this year. Joyce and Tom Gustafson were also guests.
Lee Quigley spent last weekend in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, with her friend, Lucy Healy. Wednesday Lee will entertain her sewing club at her home in Brevort. This club was organized 55 years ago with the purpose of young mothers getting together and sewing. Now there are only five remaining of the original group, and Lee says they will continue to meet as long as there are members to get together. They do not sew, but enjoy each other’s company and they have a nice lunch. It always comes down to the food.
Dennie Rippett is still working at The Fort in Mackinaw City. This weekend there was a real wedding, not a faux wedding that goes on as part of the enactments that the fort is so famous for. Dale Porter and Kate Murphy, summer employees, were married “for real” Saturday. They were attired in formal wedding dress. A reception was held at the Little Bear Conference Center. Dennie and Jackie Rippett attended the ceremonies.
On Sunday, Dave, Tracy, and I ventured over to the Dotts/Allen compound on Big Brevort Lake. We relaxed on Vern and Linda Dott’s pontoon boat tied up at their dock. Linda and Vern’s grandson, Andrew Beckley, was there, as was Jim and Ruby Allen’s granddaughter, Isabella Fischer. Sergio and Heather Barcena had a booth at the Mackinaw City craft show this weekend. When Sergio returned to the lake he had firsthand knowledge of the unfortunate fire in Mackinaw City. Sergio also regaled us with the story of trying to get out of the city on Saturday, when he got in the parade of Corvettes. Sergio was driving Heather’s Honda, much to the consternation of the parade onlookers. There were shouts of “Get that Honda out of there... What’s that Honda doing in that parade?” Sergio is such a good sport. He smiled and waved at the people on the sidelines while desperately looking for an exit. With the help of parade officials he did get on his way to I-75 and over the bridge, then home to Brevort Lake.
Brian Rose said they had four pileated woodpeckers in the woods near their home on the beach.
Bob and Olga Carr of Bellaire dropped by to visit with Tracy Movalson Monday morning. Tracy worked with Olga at Shanty Creek years ago.
Jack and Thora Shepard are still picking blueberries. This week they harvested the berries near West Branch. Thora Shepard and Anita Dumas drove to Marquette on Monday.
Marion Green, Anita Graham, Chris and Wendy Green and family, and other members of the Green family are vacationing at the Green cottage on Lake Michigan.
It’s nice to answer a knock on the door and there stands Gio Giordani with blueberry pie in one hand and a container of fresh blueberries in the other. And then there is the discovery of a bag of vine ripened tomatoes on the sidewalk courtesy of our gentleman farmer, Bob Jarzynka.
Mary Carney at the First Edition Book Store had a deluxe bat house built but the bats prefer her house instead. She wouldn’t mind, if they would stay out of the bedroom. As it is, usually at 4 a.m. she is waving towels around to capture the bats to release back out to the night.
