This time next week, all students will be in their respective classrooms. Once again parents return their children to the teachers. Many mothers will have tears in their eyes as their five-year-old starts their very first year in school, kindergarten. It is a special time for all involved. Many parents last week have driven their sons and daughters to yet another learning institution, college. What wonderful opportunities lie ahead for our young people.
In DeTour, classes commence Tuesday, September 6, for half day only. Lunch will be served and dismissal will be at 12:30 p.m. We welcome Jessica Kietzman to the teaching staff. Jessica has been assigned the music teacher position at DeTour/Drummond Schools. Mrs. Kietzman received her teaching certificate from Central Michigan University and is originally from the Charlotte area. Jessica and her husband, Jeff, will make their home in DeTour.
The DeTour Raiders Varsity Girls Basketball team are prepared for a great season. Coach Dave Miller says, “We have a veteran team with experience.” The first game was August 30 with Mackinaw City at home. The next game will be Thursday, September 1, at Engadine. The next home game will be on Tuesday, September 6, with Vanderbilt. The schedules are at all business places in the area, so be sure to pick one up and attend a game to support our girls.
Members of this year’s Raiders Girls Basketball Team are seniors Neeske Beckman (forward/guard), Marah Fierek (forward), Anne Goetz (forward), Pia Hoge (guard/forward), Janelle Klamerus (center/forward), Jessie Tominac (forward); juniors Krystal Bosley (center), Amber Burton (guard/forward), Missy Ellis (forward/center), Liz Lehman (forward), Kelley Tomlinson (guard), Erin Worden (guard). The “no food or pop allowed in the gym” will definitely be enforced this year.
Fishermen are reporting how great it is to have such a fish cleaning station in the area. The station is near the new water tower.
The DeTour Village Council held its regular meeting August 15. Clerk Linda Fisher provided the following excerpts from the meeting:
The board designated Dick Newland to apply for a grant from the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians with which to purchase the new backhoe.
The culvert on Elizabeth and Divisions streets will be replaced in the next few weeks to accommodate the discharge of the old water tower.
Ann Stafford, after 29 years of employment with the Village of DeTour as Water & Wastewater system operator, will retire January 31, 2006. She has offered to be available for consultation and laboratory assistance. Council is expected to approve and post a job description at its September meeting.
Cloverland Electric received permission to install an underground service wire along Sims Street.
A group of citizens led by local resident Glen Shaw have indicated their interest in restoring the advertising on the side of the building on the corner of Ontario and Elizabeth streets that houses the Village Inn. The Board of Directors and volunteers of the DeTour Passage Historical Museum will do all that is possible toward the restoration, preservation, and maintenance of this historically significant art work. Council cannot donate money to any private enterprise, but will support in any other way possible.
The stop sign at the corner of Midway Plaisance and Division Street will be re-installed to try to slow through traffic on this street.
