Trojans Post Shutout Win
in Season Opener Over Posen
Cedarville opened the 2005 gridiron season with a 8-0 shutout non-conference win over Posen, and in the process snapped a four-game losing streak against the Vikings Friday, August 26.
"This was a defensive struggle the entire game," said Trojans Coach Randy Schaedig.
The only touchdown came in the third quarter as Posen took the second half kickoff before Cedarville took possession at the Vikings 40 yard line and marched 60 yards. Gary Kott (DeTour) plunged over from the one yard line at the 5:44 mark for the touchdown. Peter Trealeven and Jordan Sweeney combined for the two-point conversion pass and the 8-0 lead.
A Trealeven to Sweeney 26-yard pass combination and a Matt Manley seven-yard run set up the Kott short touchdown run.
Justin Baker led the Trojans offense with 18 carries for 138 yards. Gary Kott added 18 rushing attempts for 58 yards, Alex Smith (DeTour) chipped in 20 yards on two carries, and Matt Manley had seven yards on one carry.
Peter Trealeven completed three of seven passes for 31 yards and rushed for six yards, while Jordan Sweeney caught two passes for 27 yards and Justin Baker one reception for four yards.
Two Posen scoring threats ended inside the Trojans 20 yard line and late in the first half the Vikings drove to the nine yard line before running out of downs. During the final minute of play, the North Star League member moved the ball between the 20 and 15-yard line, but again ran out of downs.
On the defensive side of the ball, Kott recorded 12 tackles and two sacks, Keith Foster added nine stops and one fumble recovery, Smith tallied nine tackles and one sack, Aaron Bright chipped in nine stops, Joe Currie notched eight tackles and one fumble recovery, Sweeney and Matt Manley both charted six, Baker marked five with one fumble recovery, and Devon Wilson counted five.
"We executed good for the first game and moved the ball. Posen also moved the ball, but each time our defense stepped up. We bent, but didn't break," added Schaedig.
Cedarville will host St. Basil of Ontario Saturday, September 3, at 1 p.m.
