Saints Linksters Win, Set Record at Cheboygan

The St. Ignace Golf Team shattered the four-man team school record of 326 while capturing the championship of the Cheboygan Invitational after posting a 308, and the Saints first four golfers earned top 10 medal honors Friday, August 26.

"I was pleased with the effort by everyone during the tourney at Cheboygan," said Saints Coach Ben Brown. "The golfers set a new school record and the first four earned top 10 medals."

Joe Brown led the Saints attack with low medallist round of 69 (36-33), while Kyle O'Boyle carded 77 (38-39), Tyler Mapes 79 (39-40), and Brad Silet 83 (37-46). Drew Cope, the Saints fifth golfer, recorded 91.

Kyle O’Boyle Grayling finished second with 326, Sault High third at 337, Petoskey 347, Cheboygan 352, and Newberry 356.

Jeffrey Gamble played in the junior varsity division and the freshman placed second with an 88.

Saints Third at the Oaks

LaSalle golfers placed third during the Rudyard Invitational at The Oaks in Kincheloe Wednesday, August 24.

Cadillac won the tourney with a team score of 313, the host Bulldogs took second with 337, the Saints third with 344, followed by Tawas at 348, Gaylord 362, Petoskey 373, Cheboygan 404, and Pellston 478.

Joe Brown carded 80, Kyle O'Boyle added 83, Brad Silet notched 90, and Tyler Mapes tallied 91 and the fifth golfer, Drew Cope, chipped in 96.

The Bulldogs were led by Jon Norton with 80. Brian Smith charted 83, Craig Wallis marked 85, George Kinsella counted 89, and the fifth golfer, Paul DeWeese, recorded 95.

Saints Third at SAC Meet

St. Ignace took third place during the first Straits Area Conference (SAC) meet with all six teams competing during competition at The Oaks in Kincheloe.

Rudyard won the meet with a team score of 338 followed by Sault High with 347, St. Ignace 348, Newberry 380, Cheboygan 394, and Rogers City 432.

Joe Brown registered 80 to lead the Saints, while Kyle O'Boyle added 85, Brad Silet chipped in 90, and Tyler Mapes tallied 93. Drew Cope notched 94 and Jeffrey Gamble marked 99 to round out the scoring for the Saints.

Brian Smith carded 82 to lead the Bulldogs, while Jon Norton charted 83, Craig Wallis counted 85, and George Kinsella chipped in 88.

St. Ignace will compete during three matches Monday, August 29, through Wednesday, August 31.
