Rudyard’s Adjustments Lead to 33-10 Triumph
Solid effort on both sides of the football lifted Rudyard to a 33-10 non-conference win over Harbor Springs Friday, August 26.
"We took what they gave us," said Bulldogs Coach Pat Maloney. "We are flexible and made adjustments as the game went on and that was a key."
Harbor Springs took the opening kickoff and drove to the Bulldogs’ five-yard line, but the Rudyard defense stalled the Rams’ scoring threat.
On the Bulldogs third play from scrimmage, Owen McGrath and Trent Salo combined on a 95-yard scoring-pass and Travis Clegg kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The Rams kicked a field goal before the Bulldogs scored three second-quarter touchdowns for a 25-3 halftime lead. McGrath and Salo hooked up on a 17-yard scoring-pass, followed by a Salo five-yard touchdown and McGrath to Clegg five-yard scoring-pass that completed the first half scoring.
Harbor Springs scored in the third quarter, but Rudyard closed out the offense with a McGrath to Salo six-yard scoring pass and Mike Chantos added the two-point conversion run.
McGrath completed seven of 11 passes for 192 yards and rushed for 48 yards. Salo gained 141 yards on six rushing attempts and caught three passes for 118 yards. Chantos gained 60 yards on seven rushing attempts, John Rogers had two receptions for 44 yards, and Clegg two receptions for 30 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Dan Bartley and Salo led the Bulldogs with 10 tackles. Clegg added eight stops with one fumble recovery, Nick Pavolski chipped in eight, Travis Siegwart and Rogers tallied four, and Jordan Gaskin with one fumble recovery.
Rudyard entertains Elk Rapids Thursday, September 1, with the junior varsity game set for 4 p.m. and the varsity game to follow.
