Hello, everyone. The month of September will surely stick in our minds forever, with the fourth anniversary of September 11, this year, and the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. But it’s wonderful to know we have so many people in our area and around the world who care, and have pulled together to help the victims of such terrible tragedies.

The September meeting of the Portage Township Board was changed from Tuesday, September 13, to Tuesday, September 20, in the Curtis Community Building. For more information, call (906) 586-9522.

The Helen Newberry Joy Hospital and Healthcare Center will have an A.C.L.S. (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) provider course Thursday, September 15, and Friday, September 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the Luce County Ambulance Building in Newberry. The Living Water Assembly of God Church will feature special services with Mike and Bonnie Tyler, Friday, September 16, at 7 p.m., Saturday, September 17, at 6 p.m., and Sunday, September 18, at 10 a.m. For more information, call (906) 293-8868.

The Luce County Sheriff’s Department will be issuing permits for the purchase and registration of handguns Monday, September 12, through Friday, September 16, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the sheriff’s department in Newberry.

The Freeman-Hastings House Museum and Fenske Long House Museum in Engadine are open every Tuesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone is welcome to take a tour through time. The museums are very interesting and the people who have organized and set up everything are amazing. Stop by for yourself to see what a wonderful museum there is right in Engadine.

The LINK Youth Board will meet Thursday, September 15, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Link, on West Helen Street in Newberry.

Engadine elementary and high school pictures will be taken Friday, September 16. Information order forms were sent home with students earlier this week.

The Newberry Eagles Club will have a fish fry, Friday, September 16, from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Club on M-28, two miles east of the Newberry junction. There will be all-you-can-eat fish or you may choose from the Friday menu.

Saturday, September 17, the Diabetes Self Management Education Program Advisory Committee of Helen Newberry Joy Hospital will sponsor the third annual walk for diabetes. Registration will be at 9 a.m., with the walk at 10 a.m. For more information, call Lynn Kihm at (906) 293-9286.

The Christian Fellowship, SBC, is having a block party, Saturday, September 17, from noon to 3 p.m. at 314 East Truman Boulevard in Newberry.

Saturday, September 17, Danny Price will be having his grand opening of his new Auto Value store in Newberry. Danny and his family are wonderful, helpful people. It’s great to have them here in our area.

The Manistique Lakes Area Lions Club will have an all-you-can-eat pancake brunch, Sunday, September 18, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the community building in Curtis. All net proceeds will go to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The Curtis Community Ladies Aid will also hold a bake sale during the brunch.

Monday, September 19, State Representative Steven Adamini will hold his monthly Manistique Town Hall meeting from 10 a.m. to noon in the Schoolcraft County Courthouse in Manistique.

The Healthy Lifestyles Weight Loss Group will meet Monday, September 19, at 4:30 p.m. at the Mackinac Straits Clinic in Naubinway.

There will be a benefit dinner for Kevin and Andrea (Rall) Kalmbach, for assistance with childbirth-related bills, Sunday, September 25, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Garfield Township Hall in Engadine. The meal will consist of roast pork, baked potato, spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread, vegetables, drink, and dessert. This is by donation only and sponsored by the Rural Upper Peninsula Right to Life with additional financial support from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
