Here it is, the middle of September and our weather has been almost luxurious. How lucky we are to live in an area surrounded by so much natural beauty. This writer has been spending a lot of time recently watching freighter passage and learning a bit more about the birds in the area. It offers so much pleasure and all you need to do is take a look around. It really puts things in perspective considering the blight brought on by Hurricane Katrina for so many who have lost so much in such a devastating and quick way; their families and pets too.
Everyone should attend the DeTour High Girl’s basketball games. Forget the Detroit Shock; this is a real competitive sport, right here at home. Last Thursday’s game against Pickford was truly exciting. Lizzie Lehman, with all the focus of a pro, took the game out of a tie in the last few seconds. Wow. The J.V. team isn’t bad either. What a great way to spend an evening out. Great basketball, good food, and you get to cheer on these strong girls. Go Raiders!
The Third Annual Happy Apple Saturday is starting to look like a really fun day for those of all ages in the area. The day will take place in downtown DeTour area. This year more people are looking forward to getting involved. There will be more focus on activities for kids to do as well. Events during the day are a 50/50 raffle, the DeTour Homemakers will be selling homemade “Elephant Ears,” many vendors selling jams, soaps, gourmet foods, jewelry, and Tupperware. One event will be the second annual Apple Pie Contest at the Dockside CafĂ©. Bring your special recipe for Apple Pie in by 10 a.m. for judging at 1 p.m. Fire Chief Red Adams has offered to bring down the fire trucks for the kids to check out. There will be face painting, storytelling, and possibly street actors too. If you are interested in participating or have an idea to share that would be fun to add to Happy Apple Saturday, please contact me and I will direct you to the proper person.
Best wishes to Hal Burton during his recovery. Our thoughts and prayers go to him and his family.
Enjoy your week. Here is a thought for you: Don’t cross the stream to look for water. (Swedish proverb)
