The beautiful fall weather we’ve had lately makes it ideal to go out and attend our school’s sports games. The DeTour Raiders varsity girls basketball has been doing very well. One morning last week, on the very early 9&10 Morning Show, highlights of a few of the girls basketball games were shown.

It was exciting to see the Raiders versus Brimley as one of the games televised, with the Raiders winning by three points. Way to go, gals. The attendance at the Raiders games has been great. We’re in there rooting for the home team.

Attention all area senior citizens, caregivers, and interested persons: Do you have questions about the new Medicare prescription drug benefit? The Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assistance Program (MMAP) can help. CCSS office coordinator, Sue Lehman, is setting up a meeting for people to learn about these changes, ask questions, and get personalized help from the local counselor. There will be a meeting on Drummond Island at the Township Hall Thursday, October 27, at 10 a.m. There will be a meeting in DeTour at the Village Hall Thursday, October 27, at 1:30 p.m. Participants are requested to bring their Medicare packets and a list of current medications. The presenter is Sherry Whitman, U.P. MMAP coordinator. This service is sponsored by Consolidated Community School Service. The meeting will be one to two hours long. For more information, contact Sue Lehman at (906) 297-2011, ext. 164 or (906) 297-8088.

Once again the sessions on “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen” will be instructed by Olive Warner. The starting date will be sometime in late October. This is a six-week class, which will meet every Wednesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Room 199 (elementary wing of the DeTour School). Enrollment fee is $36. At the September 19 meeting of the DeTour Village Council, Councilman Jason Fountain suggested that George Newell and the private snowplowers in the Village get together for a meeting to discuss guidelines for this winter’s plowing. It might prevent problems this winter if everyone understands where the snow can be stockpiled and how it is to be cleaned up.

Recommendations for a job description posting for the upcoming openings at the Water Plant will be made at the October meeting.

In the meantime, the personnel committee will talk about wages, job descriptions, and wording for the posting.

A thought: A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.
