Last week as I was walking along the sidewalk in Hessel, I noted a beautiful, flowering vine. It was loaded with clumps of pretty, white flowers. I tried to find out what it was, but no one seemed to know. Since then, I’m quite sure that it is a clematis called Virgin’s Bower. It is such a pretty vine, full of white flowers and growing against the wall of the Islander Bar, the side facing the St. Ignace News office. I’d really like to have one to plant in my yard.

Duck hunters are out in the early morning and bow season has begun for deer hunters. The weather still continues to be glorious, the leaves are beautiful, and there couldn’t be a more pleasant place to be this time of the year. However, predictions of a winter with lots of lake effect snow is in the forecast. When the lakes are as warm as they are, the cold in the upper air condenses over them and pours down the snow.

It has been a busy week for the young people of our community with the celebration of Homecoming at Cedarville High School. The week was filled with special events, climaxing with an exciting, winning football game and queen contest. Special dress days throughout the week, powder-puff football, along with videos, skits, and speeches from the queen candidates all filled the time. Congratulations to the football team and coaches for the winning game, climaxing a busy and exciting week.

Last week as I wrote about the beautiful flowers outside the motel on M-l34, I used the wrong name for the motel. The one I was referring to was the Islands Inn Motel just past the corner of M-129 and M-134, however, the Les Cheneaux Motel too always has lovely flowers and a well-kept yard, but it is much farther up the highway.

Barbara and Jim Brewer of Hill Island have just returned from a special trip to the Grand Canyon. Their trip was unusual because after they flew to Phoenix, they traveled to Sedona, where they enjoyed a jeep tour through Red Rocks. They then went to Williams, a nearby town, where they boarded a train for an excursion called Rails to the Rim. On that railroad ride, they experienced an old fashioned train robbery, the kind that we used to see in the old western movies. Barbara said that although the “robbers” came up on horses, they were not as talented as the old-timers when they jumped from the horses to the moving train. The train had to stop to let them on! Anyway, the whole experience was fun for them. Of course the Grand Canyon and the Petrified Forest were among the highlights, along with seeing a lot of wildlife such as elk, antelope, and even a road runner.
