John and Pega Kennedy celebrated their anniversary September 28 by spending the evening in Mackinaw City and then the next day on Mackinac Island, doing all the tourist things such as a carriage ride and other activities one does on the Island.

There are plans being made for the Secret Pal party this October. I heard maybe a hay ride was on the program. As the plans progress, all pals will be informed.

Pastor Herb Kitzman, on his way home after a hunting trip out west, ran into detours in Manistique and couldn’t make it to church last Sunday, but did check in at John and Pega’s Wildwood Pastie Shop and said to greet all those he was unable to see.

Eric Movalson was home for a short weekend of hunting Saturday, October 1. Saturday afternoon was set aside for the memorable Michigan-Michigan State football game. Bob Flora joined us for lunch before the game. While Eric was here with the pups, Hershey and Reese, Miss Amanda and her brother, Zach, were home with their mom, Kelli. Zach and mom went to the pumpkin festival in Howell Saturday, while Miss Amanda visited with a friend. They all went to Cedar Point Sunday for a fine day of fun.

Mary Ann First’s mom, Loretta Highsmith, of Otsego, is visiting with Larry and Mary Anne this week. Monday is a day for shopping. Loretta is a spry 88 years old and going strong.

Friday night dinner guests at our home were Bob Flora and Lee Quigley.

Davie Movalson and Bob Flora were callers in Pickford Sunday, October 2.

Sharon and Joe Chalmers have just returned from an extended trip out east and up into Canada. They toured Gaspe Bay, near Quebec, and found the scenery and the people wonderful even though Sharon and Joe don’t speak French. Sharon says English is the secondary language taught in the schools, but not many wanted to try their English on the tourists. Joe and Sharon went on to Nova Scotia and took the ferry (a long ride) to Newfoundland. Gas was very pricey, $1.40 a liter. They had a bit of a scare back in Nova Scotia, as the gas stations all had lines of people waiting to get gas owing to rumors of a shortage. They took a boat tour and upon getting off the boat, there was a crowd of other passengers at a standstill. There was a bull moose and a cow in the area and the bull got a little aggressive. He appeared to want to charge the crowd but eventually backed up and they went on their way. The trip reminded Sharon of the Upper Peninsula. In Newfoundland, there are a few roads that wind along the shore where there are tiny fishing villages. The taxes in Canada are many, and it’s expensive to travel any distance for a length of time. After 3.5 weeks, Sharon and Joe were glad to get back to Brevort.

Friday, September 30, Ann and Jim Dyer hosted a dinner party for Charlie and Helen Dowd and Missie and Tim Roberts and their son, Will, all of the Niceville, Florida, area. Dottie Glashaw was also a guest.

Tom and Joyce Gustafson are home from Gloucester, Virginia, where they spent two weeks at their vacation home there. The temperatures got up to 85 and 90 degrees with high humidity.

It was a good beach walking day Sunday, October 2, which is what Lee Quigley and I did. We found some good pieces of driftwood.

Todd and Connie Backus of Houston, Texas, rode out Hurricane Rita at their apartment rather than evacuate. They taped up the windows, filled up the bathtub with water, had Coleman lanterns and flashlights, and plenty of food. As it was, they endured a good windstorm and rain with no damage. The downtown high-rise buildings had some windows blown out, but not the damage some expected.

Dennie and Jackie Rippett took a bus tour from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to Washington, D.C. It was hard to get around as a peace march was going on as well as the protestors and anti-protestors. They were thankful they had a knowledgeable bus driver who knew all the ins and outs of touring our nation’s capitol. They went to Arlington and the World War II Memorial. Dennis found his brother’s name on the computer that was part of the memorial. This was the first time Dennie and Jackie had been there and they enjoyed it greatly.

Nancy Shepard is at Helena and Mike Shepard’s home for the week caring for Tucker, Tessa, and Tabitha while their babysitter is on vacation.

Thora Shepard and Anita Dumas are in Marquette on business and will visit Anita’s daughter, Nicki, who is a student at Northern Michigan University.

Janice Hoover spent time this past week at the Hoover cottage and delivered a lovely bench to the church.

Happy birthday to Georgiana Gustafson October 3 and Micki Knowles October 11.

Happy anniversary to Shari and Ray Barone October 11.
