St. Ignace golf team qualified for the next round of the state tournaments with a third place finish in the districts and the Saints’ Joe Brown earned low medallist honors among 60 golfers at the Boyne Highland Mohr Course Thursday, September 29.

Brown carded 82 (39-43) for the low round on the day. Tyler Mapes finished sixth with an 89, Curtis Hetherington added 92, Brad Silet chipped in 95, and Kyle O'Boyle notched 97.

"The weather included rain and wind throughout the day and that was reason for the high scores," said Saints Coach Ben Brown.

The Saints recorded team score (low four golfers) with 358, six shots behind Harbor Springs and Rudyard, who tied for first place with 352, but the Rams took home the hardware and first place after the tie breaker using the fifth golfers score.

Brown and Ted Griffin of Harbor Springs (37-47) were tied for medallist honors coming down the 18th hole, when the LaSalle High School senior birdied the final hole and Griffin registered a one over par.

Brian Smith and Craig Wallis tallied 86's to place third, while Jon Norton notched 89, George Kinsella tallied 91, and Paul DeWeese charted 96.

Six teams, the Rams, Bulldogs, Saints, Newberry, Inland Lakes, and Lincoln-Alcona from the districts, will make the trip to Traverse City and compete in the regionals at the Wolverine Course at Grand Traverse Resort Thursday, October 6.

The top three teams among the 12 teams at the regionals, along with the top three individuals from the non-qualifying teams, will make the trip to East Lansing for the state finals.
