SAC Championship: It’s Rudyard and Brian Smith
Rudyard golf team captured the team title of the Straits Area Conference (SAC) and the Bulldogs’ Brian Smith earned Player of the Year during the final regular season meet of the season at the St. Ignace Golf and Country Club Monday, September 26.
The Bulldogs edged out the Saints for team honors, followed by Sault High, Newberry, Cheboygan, and Rogers City.
Smith carded a 54-hole (three league meets) score of 243 to inch out the Saints’ Joe Brown at 246 for the top player in the league.
Joining the top two players on the first team were the Bulldogs’ Jon Norton (250) and Craig Wallis (255), the Saints’ Kyle O’Boyle (253) and Ryan Yacoune (250), and D.J. Kuczewaki (255) of Sault High.
Rudyard Bulldogs Golf team won the Straits Area Conference title. Team members include Coach Ron VanSloten, Brian Smith, Jon Norton, Craig Wallis, George Kansella, Paul DeWeese, and Tim Knutsen.
Receiving second team honors were Tyler Mapes (259), Brad Silet (272), and Drew Cope (273) of St. Ignace, George Kinsella (263) and Paul DeWeese (270) of Rudyard, Tim Robbins (259) of Newberry, and Todd Beaumont (268) of Sault High.
Rudyard Wins Final
League Meet
Rudyard won the final SAC meet of the season after recording a team score of 329 as Jon Norton led the way with a 18-hole score of 78, Brian Smith added 81, Craig Wallis chipped in 84, and George Cansella notched 86, while Paul DeWeese tallied 88, and Tim Knutsen charted 99. The low four scores counted in the team total.
St. Ignace finished second with a score of 342 as Curtis Hetherington carded 80, Tyler Mapes 84, Joe Brown 85, Drew Cope 89, while Kyle O'Boyle charted 90 and Brad Silet marked 93.
Newberry finished third with 349 followed by Cheboygan with 379 and Rogers City with 384 during the six-team tourney.
