Area Harriers Compete at Bridge View, Headlands, Central Lake

Kody King of St. Ignace leads the pack during the opening lap of the Straits Area Conference cross country meet Tuesday, September 27, at the Mackinac Bridge View Park.
The Sault High boys and girls took home first places during the Straits Area Conference meet at Bridge View Park in St. Ignace on Tuesday, September 27.
The Blue Devils won the boys division with 25 points. Rogers City finished second with 79, Rudyard 86, St. Ignace 89, Cedarville 139, Pickford and Newberry 211, and Cheboygan 298, while the Sault High girls recorded 39 points, Rogers City 68, Rudyard 86, Cheboygan 87, Newberry 116, St. Ignace 226, Cedarville 257, and Pickford 274.
Stu Chapman of Sault High won the boys race with a time of 17:52 and Kaylee Kreft of Rogers City finished first in the girls meet in 20:04.
St. Ignace: Kody King placed eighth to lead the Saints with a time of 19:33. Don McLeod was 13th in 20:01, Jake Weiss 14th in 20:08, Kaiden Shiemke 34th in 20:47, Nathan Zimmerman 21:34, Justin Emery in 22:48, and Lewis Steiner 30:25. Chelcee Tiernan finished ninth in 23:32, Sara Tafelski in 27:55, and Kate Springsteen 28:52.
Cedarville: Sheldon Tassier took 17th place in 20:16, Michael Thompson 27th in 20:59, and Luke Murray 28th in 21:01, while Jimmy Eberts was timed in 21:20, Fernando Ruiz 22:21, and Adam Dingman 22:35.
Rebecca Gregg took 25th place in 25:10, Katie Eberts in 28:42, and Casey Long in 34:20.
Pickford: Nic Raden finished 16th in 20:13, Kip Cline in 21:32, Matt Ross 22:07, and Pat Savoie 23:33, while for the girls, Stephanie Savoie was in 24th place in 24:58.
Rudyard: Alex Malaski finished fourth in 18:59, Isiah Otten seventh in 19:17, Josh Kaminski 11th in 19:50, Karl DeWitt 18th in 20:33, Cory Thompson 22:40, and Tim Ash 26:29.
Alisha Thompson took fifth in 23:09 to lead the girls. Brittany Hoolsema 11th in 23:40, Meagan Mayer 19th in 24:12, Sara English 23rd in 24:42, Meghan Mitchell 28th in 25:22, Courtney Fowler 27:13, Jessica Rynberg 30:13, Samantha Tulgelske 30:53, Amanda Hoolsema 32:35, and Evelyne Robertson 40:07.
In another meet at Petoskey, Don McLeod completed the course in 18:32, Kody King 19:16, Jake Weiss 19:56, Nathan Zimmerman 20:33, Kaiden Shiemke 20:59, Justin Emery 21:11, and Lewis Steiner 31:49. Sara Tafelski, with a time of 26:32, was the only female competing.
Comets Host Saints, Panthers
in C-C Meet at Headlands
Mackinaw City hosted St. Ignace and Pickford during a triangular meet at the Headlands Thursday, September 29.
The Comets took the first three places in the boys division as David Mercer won in 17:21, Dane Curth was second in 17:29, and Logan Paquet was third in 17:33.
The Saints’ Don McLeod took fourth in 17:41, Kody King fifth in 17:46, the Comets’ Blaine Paquet sixth in 18:22, and Matt Alexander seventh in 18:26. Jake Weiss of St. Ignace finished in 18:43, Nic Raden of Pickford in 18:49, and Brandyn Clemens of Mackinaw City in 19:05 rounded out the top 10 runners.
Remaining runners and times include the Comets’ Chris Laninga in 19:10, Kevin Darrow 19:41, Cullen Lawson 20:00, Barry Paquet 20:01, Klaus Jaggi 21:16, and Adam Alexander 22:52, the Saints’ Nathan Zimmerman 19:23, Kaiden Shiemke 19:55, Justin Emery 21:12, and Lewis Steiner 27:04, and the Panthers’ Luke Barry 20:47 and Pat Savoie 21:06.
Chelcee Tiernan won the girls meet with a time of 21:57. Stephanie Savoie of Pickford took second in 23:05, Sara Tafelski of St. Ignace third in 24:20, Ciara McVey of Mackinaw City fourth in 24:25, Kate Springsteen of St. Ignace fifth in 28:21, and Julie Alexander of Mackinaw City in 30:19.
Comets and Trojans at Central Lake Invitational
Mackinaw City finished second and Cedarville placed fifth during the Central Lake Boys Cross Country Class D Invitational Saturday, September 24.
Mt. Pleasant St. Heart won the event with 68 points followed by the Comets with 74, Fairview 84, Ellsworth 113, the Trojans 131, Wolverine 141, Buckley 144, Chassell 169, Central Lake 223, Gaylord St. Mary 237, and Bellaire 292.
David Mercer led the Comets with a third place finish in 17:46, while Dane Curth took 14th in 18:29, Logan Paquet 18th in 18:46, Matt Alexander 23rd in 19:05, and Blaine Paquet 25th in 19:13. Rounding out the team were Brandon Clemens in 19:51 and Chris Laninga in 20:02.
Jordan Sweeney placed 21st in 19:02 and Michael Thompson 22nd in 19:04 to lead the Trojans, while Luke Murray finished in 19:24, Sheldon Tassier in 19:34, Jimmy Eberts in 19:29, Adam Dingman in 21:03, and C.J. Paquin in 22:24.
Nic Raden of Pickford took 24th place in 19:06, and DeTour runners competing included Stan Stocking with a time of 20:07, Teryn Miller 22:02, and Chris Fussman 23:36.
Cedarville girls took third place and Pickford girls finished seventh during the prestigious run.
Jessie Duncan placed 11th in 22:37 to lead Cedarville. Kara Griffin was 16th in 23:22, Ashley Sweeney 21st in 23:50, and Rebecca Gregg 25th in 24:06. Caitlin Wright completed the course in 24:15 and Casey Long in 31:25.
Jasmine Ledy finished fifth with a time of 20:56 to lead Pickford, while Megan Arbie was timed in 24:19, Stephanie Savoie 25:43, KayLynn Portice 26:01, and Rachel Schmitigal 30:36.
Competing for DeTour were Laura Fussman in 25:05 and Liz Lehman in 26:37, and for Mackinaw City Ciara McVey in 25:19, Callan Martin in 27:25, and Katie Smydra in 28:19.
