Veterans Day has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1938; originally called Armistice Day, it commemorated the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. After World War II, the name was changed to Veterans Day. Congress declared it a day to honor all veterans in 1954. Canada honors its veterans on Remembrance Day, also celebrated November 11.
Currently, veterans make up about 30 percent of the U.S. population, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
On July 23, 2002, the United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 293 declaring November 7 through 12 as “National Veterans Awareness Week” for the purpose of emphasizing educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans.
On Friday, November 11, the veterans will have lunch in the Home Economics Room, served by the fourth and eighth grade students. After lunch the elementary students will present a program. All parents and community members are welcome to attend the ceremony.
This year’s Michigan Safe Schools Week is November 6 to12. As in past years, a pledge signing/safe schools week kick-off event will take place at the State Capitol Monday, November 7, beginning at 10 a.m.
The ceremony will culminate with students at the capitol leading a statewide safe schools pledge signing. The Safe Schools Initiative Workgroup is encouraging each school, parent, student, and community member from around the state to join in and also sign a safe schools pledge.
