Veterans Day is Friday, November 11. Did you know that in 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery? This site, on a hillside overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, became the focal point of reverence for America's veterans. Many memorial gestures take place November 11, giving universal recognition to the ending of World War I fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month). The day became known as "Armistice Day."

Armistice Day was changed to honor all veterans. Congress was requested to make this day an occasion to honor those who have served America in all wars. In 1954 President Eisenhower signed a bill proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day.

Many of us take our freedom for granted, never realizing what it’s like for others living in far-off countries, who don’t have the luxury of going for a walk around the block, going to the local candy store, buying a newspaper, or perhaps just sitting on a park bench breathing in the fresh air. We continue to enjoy these privileges of freedom on a daily basis, which is why we all should show respect for the loyalty of our veterans.

Please be sure to attend the VFW Veterans Day memorial service at 1 p.m. at the Engadine Mill Pond Park.

Until next time, take care.
