Scott L. Hauswirth of Rudyard worked as a corrections officer for the State of Michigan, and was a Vietnam War era veteran who served in the United States Army Air Defense Artillery. He is remembered by friends and family members as "a kind, caring, helpful man who was a good friend to many people."

Mr. Hauswirth was 55 when he died Thursday, October 27, 2005, at his home.

He was born November 15, 1949 in Highland Park to Paul Louis and Irene (nee Maki) Hauswirth.

He was a 1967 graduate of Hazel Park High School, and entered the military soon after graduation.

He met Lorna E. Beishlag, who started a correspondence with him after seeing his name as a serviceman listed in her church bulletin. They married February 18, 1972, and lived in Swartz Creek and Kalkaska before moving to the Rudyard area in 1980, where Mr. Hauswirth began working as a corrections officer.

Mr. Hauswirth was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church in Rudyard, the Chippewa County Shooting Association, and the Rudyard Lions Club, where he had served as club treasurer for many years.

He loved hunting, fishing, Cowboy Action Shooting, and playing hockey. He was especially thankful for the time he had to enjoy his grandchildren, family members said.

Mr. Hauswirth is survived by his wife, Lorna; three sons and their families, Jeremy and Laurie Hauswirth of Rock, Jonathon and Coreen Hauswirth of Gwinn, and Mark and Rachel Hauswirth of Ishpeming; four grandchildren, Lillian, Lyneha, Scott Thomas, and Logan; his mother, Irene Hauswirth of Hancock; two brothers and their families, Paul Louis and Sandy Hauswirth Jr., of Ontonagon and Dale and Julie Hauswirth of Kincheloe, and one sister and her family, Beth and Scott Schnau of Kentwood.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Louis Hauswirth Sr., in January 2005.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, November 1, at St. James Lutheran Church in Rudyard. The Reverend Katheryn King officiated.

Contributions in Mr. Hauswirth's memory can be made to Hospice of Chippewa County, 508 Ashmun Street, Suite 120, Sault Ste. Marie Michigan 49783, or to the Youth Program of the Chippewa County Shooting Association, P.O. Box 454, Sault Ste. Marie Michigan 49783.
