Mackinac Island defeated Grand Marais 8-3 in the semifinals of the soccer district tournaments Monday, October 24, but fell to host Big Bay de Noc in the championship game 4-2 Thursday, October 27.

During the win over the Polar Bears, the Lakers trailed 2-1 at halftime before stepping up their play in the second half to post the win.

Jason Pettit scored four goals and one assist, with three scores in the second half. Robert Chambers tallied his three goals all in the second half, Caleb Straight chipped in one goal and two assists, Sam Kamphuis notched two assists, and Ben Mosley and Karlena Mosley charted one assist.

"We took care of business on offense and defense in the second half after a sluggish start in the first half," said Lakers Coach Ken Straight.

The host Black Bears upended Beaver Island 6-1 in the second semifinal to advance into the title game.

Mackinac Island played well in the championship game against Big Bay de Noc, trailing 1-0 at halftime, but fell short in the second half. Caleb Straight and Jason Pettit scored the goals for the Lakers and Ben Mosley recorded one assist.

"I was proud of the way the team played against Big Bay," added Coach Straight. "We had a outstanding season and it was too bad that it had to come to an end."

The Lakers completed their successful season with a 12-3 overall record, with defeats coming to Beaver Island during the first weekend series of the season and in the district finals.

Seniors playing in their final season for the Lakers were Ben Mosley, Christina McLean, Emily St. Onge, Sam Kamphuis, and Jason Pettit.
