Mackinac Island Lakers Sweep Maplewood Baptist in Hoops, Volleyball

Jason Pettit of Mackinac Island and Mark Shaw of Maplewood Baptist Academy (MBA) scored 28 points each to lead their respective teams, but the Lakers had a stronger supporting role to down the Black Bears 70-64 in a matinee non-conference game Tuesday, December 20.
Ben Mosley added 15 points that included three triples, Woody Beardsley chipped in 13, Sam Kamphuis notched eight, Tyler McLean tallied four, and Caleb Straight charted two for Mackinac Island.
Brad Shaw chipped in 15 points, Allen Orr added 10, Caleb Rader notched nine, and Jason King tallied two for MBA.
The Lakers held an 17-16 scoring edge after the first eight minutes as the score was tied three times and the teams exchanged leads three times, with Mosley scoring eight for the Lakers and Mark Shaw tallying 12 for the Black Bears. In the second quarter Mackinac Island outscored MBA 21-16 for a 38-32 advantage as Pettit and Shaw scored nine points for their teams.
Pettit continued his strong inside play with 10 points during the first 4:45 of the third quarter to help the Lakers build their lead to 48-37 at the 3:15 mark.
The Black Bears cut the Lakers lead to eight, 52-44 with 1:45 left in the third quarter, before Pettit scored five and Mosley chipped in three for a 60-46 lead going into the final period. MBA outscored Mackinac Island 18-10 in the fourth quarter to cut the final deficit to six points.
The Lakers will go into the holiday break with a record of 4-0 overall and will be off until the weekend road series with Paradise Friday, January 6, and Saturday, January 7.

Black Bears in Volleyball
Mackinac Island swept Maplewood Baptist Academy (MBA) 25-20 and 25-21 during afternoon matinee volleyball matches Tuesday, December 20.
Christina McLean led the Lakers with six service points, five aces, six digs, one kills, and one assist, Melissa Bunker added six points, two aces, 11 assists, six digs, and three kills, Kristina Kamphuis chipped in six aces, seven digs, six kills, and one assist, Danielle Wightman notched four points, two aces, one kill, and one dig, Emily St. Onge tallied three points, one ace, nine digs, four kills, one block, and one assist, Shayleen Mosley charted two points, one ace, and three digs, Arial Leeper marked two points, Jane Finkel counted one ace, and Karlena Mosley recorded two digs.

The Black Bears took a 11-4 lead on six unanswered points as Carter notched five straight service points before the Lakers slowly climbed back into the match as Bunker charted five consecutive points to slice the MBA lead to 1513.
Mackinac Island tallied five that included four service points by McLean as the Lakers took a 19-17 lead and Shayleen Mosley and Wightman scored two points each to ice the win.
During the second match, Kamphuis scored three service points for a 13-10 lead and McLean chipped in two for a 1613 advantage.
MBA recorded three points to notch the score at 16 before Leeper served three points and St. Onge chipped in two to build the Lakers lead to 21-17.
The Black Bears closed the margin to 23-20, but the Lakers answered with two points to preserve the victory.
