Frederick Barras

Frederick M. Barras of Sault Ste. Marie worked for 24 years at Hoover Precision Products, first in the shipping department and then in quality control. He was a talented musician who played in many local bands.

Mr. Barras was 60 when he died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, with his family at his side.

He was born September 2, 1944, in Sault Ste. Marie to Patrick Joseph and Josephine Henrietta (nee Handley) Barras.

A lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie, Mr. Barras was graduated there from Loretta Catholic High School. He married Judith Ann Kennedy April 16, 1966, at St. Mary's Catholic Pro-Cathedral in Sault Ste. Marie.

Mr. Barras was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, and a former member of the Sault Ste. Marie Auxiliary Police.

He enjoyed spending time with his three grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Pa."

Mr. Barras is survived by his wife, Judy; a daughter and her family, Annette and Ronald Brabant of Sault Ste. Marie; three grandchildren, Lindsey, Steven, and Haley; his beloved cat, "Miss Kitty; one brother and his family, Edwin and Rita Barras of Indianapolis, Indiana; his mother-in-law, Ann Kennedy of Sault Ste. Marie; one brother-in-law, Edward Kennedy of Brimley; one sister-in-law, Sharon Kennedy of Brimley, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Carol Lisa Barras, and his father-in-law, Elvin Kennedy.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, August 2, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sault Ste. Marie. Deacon Bill Piche officiated.

Private interment will be in Oaklawn Chapel Gardens in Bruce Township.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Endowed Carol Barras Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, at 523 Ashmun Street, Sault Ste. Marie Michigan 49783.

Reamer Galer Funeral Home of Pickford assisted the family.
