Saints Post First Win During SAC Contest
St. Ignace Also Defeated by EUPC Rival Cedarville in Non-Conference Game

Ashley St. Louis hits this triple for three of her career high 25 points in the Saints’ win over the Bulldogs.

Ashley St. Louis scored a career high 25 points and St. Ignace earned its first win of the season with a 62-52 Straits Area Conference decision over Rudyard Thursday, September 8.

The game was moved form the Harris Kahl High School Gymnasium to the middle school gymnasium after the floor in the 40-year-old facility suffered moisture problems.

The senior guard scored 19 of her 25 points in the second and third quarter and added 10 rebounds, six steals, and three assists, while Kelsey Cryderman chipped in nine points, Jenny Massaway notched eight, Sam Wyers tallied six, Krista LaVake charted five, Joelle Sword marked four points and six boards, Jodie Langstaff counted three points, and Stevie Gould charted two points, five steals, and five assists.

"I was pleased with the way we played," said Saints Coach Dorene Ingalls. "Everyone scored and that is important and a key to our success for the remainder of the season."

Corine Ross scored 17 points and Dana VanSloten added 16 to lead the Bulldogs offense, while Kelli Koivisto chipped in eight points, Aimee Doyle and Megan Rogers both tallied five, and Courtney Mesnard notched one.

Rudyard took a 6-0 lead at 5:02 of the opening quarter before the Saints cut the margin to 10-9 after the first eight minutes.

St. Ignace took the lead for good at 19-17 with 3:36 left in the first half on two free throws by Cryderman. The Saints extended the lead to 30-22, but VanSloten tallied three and Ross chipped in two for a 30-27 halftime score.

The Saints have suffered from poor free throw shooting during the first three games, but in the first half St. Ignace made 11 of 16 in the first half to spearhead the offense.

Ross scored to open the second half for a 30-29 count before St. Ignace outscored Rudyard 21-1 to build the lead to 51-30 after three quarters as St. Louis scored nine and Wyers notched four.

The Bulldogs didn't quit and at the 3:38 mark had sliced the Saints’ lead to 56-45 with a 15-5 advantage as VanSloten charted eight, but LaVake, Sword, and St. Louis answered for St. Ignace to ice the victory.

Free Throws Lift Trojans

Over Saints

St. Ignace outscored Cedarville 35-29 from the field, but the Trojans held a 22-8 margin from the free throw line to lift them to a 51-44 non-conference win Tuesday, September 6.

The Saints made 16 field goals, four triples, but connected on just eight of 25 from the free throw line, while the Trojans scored 14 field goals, one trey, and 22 of 34 from the charity stripe.

Lauren Izzard led the Trojans with 15 points. Emily Feldhake added eight, Marcelle Reno and Jessica Duncan chipped in seven each, Donielle Landreville notched five, Marcie Mason tallied four, and Lindsay McLeod and Kara Griffin both charted three.

Ashley St. Louis scored 12 points and Jenny Massaway added 10 to lead the Saints, while Krista LaVake added eight, Kelsey Cryderman chipped in four, Joelle Sword and Jodie Langstaff notched three apiece, and Stevie Gould and Sam Wyers charted two each.

The pesky Saints wouldn't let Cedarville build a comfortable lead while both teams’ pressure defense carried the squads to scoring strings throughout the contest.

Cedarville held a 14-12 scoring edge after the first eight minutes with six of eight from the charity stripe and in the second quarter the Saints notched the score at 17 with 5:28 on the clock, but went scoreless for the remainder of the first half, while the Trojans scored eight for a 25-17 halftime advantage.

Both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter for a 35-27 score going into the final period. With 4:32 left in the game, Cedarville led 41-32 before St. Louis scored five and Massaway added two to slice the Trojans’ lead to 42-41 at the 3:12 mark.

During the final 2:50, Izzard took control for the Trojans with five points that included three of four from the free throw line. The senior made seven of 10 for the game, while the team connected on 10 of 13 in the fourth quarter to ice the win.

Win Over Saints

Cedarville defeated St. Ignace 43-24 in the junior varsity game Tuesday, September 6.

Billie McLeod scored 16 points, Caitlin Wright added 10, Ashley Sweeney chipped in five, Karley Smith and Carissa Sudol both tallied four, and Rachelle Hansen and Katie Bowlby notched two apiece for the Trojans.

Marcie Rickley scored seven points, Alyssa Pechta added six, Amanda Coveyou chipped in five, and Molly Therrian, Page Paul, and Stacee Schnicke tallied two each.

Come-From-Behind Win

St. Ignace junior varsity posted a 40-39 come-from-behind win over Rudyard Thursday, September 8.

The Saints trailed until the four-minute mark of the fourth quarter and hung on to record the win and improve to 3-1 on the season.

Amanda Coveyou scored 18 points to lead the Saints, while Marcie Rickley added eight, Stacee Schnicke and Jessica Massaway chipped in four, Kayla Gustin notched three, Alyssa Pechta tallied two, and Page Paul charted one.

Chelsea Mesnard scored 13 points for the Bulldogs, Lisa Folkersma added eight, Jamie Fegan chipped in six, Betsy Wileman tallied four, Erin Watson and Erin Jarvie both notched three, and Katia Locke counted two.
