(Photograph courtesy of Charlie and Marilyn Vallier) Scorpion snowmobiles from the 1960s and 70s and Hus-ski snowmobiles from the 60s will be among the featured sleds on display this weekend at Naubinway’s 14th Annual Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show. More than 200 rare and vintage sleds will be on display Saturday, February 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Naubinway. Food booths and a snowmobile swap area will be available.
The vintage Hus-skis were originally advertised “to look like a bulldozer, with a wooden cleated track, and seat like an ironing board on skis,” said show organizer Charlie Vallier, who has been involved in staging the show for all of its 14 years.
“Every year, the show gets bigger. People like coming back because of the small town atmosphere and friendly people in Naubinway,” Mr. Vallier said, noting that last year, 261 sleds were displayed. The show, the largest of its kind in Michigan, draws snowmobile enthusiasts from all over Michigan, Canada, and many surrounding states, as well as several state directors of the Antique Snowmobile Club of America.
Events will begin Friday morning, when owners of the vintage snowmobiles will ride from Naubinway to Engadine, followed by a pancake breakfast at the Engadine Town Hall prepared by the West Mackinac American Legion. An afternoon ride of six miles will culminate with a bonfire at Pipeline Bridge, followed by a new feature this year, a Husski Hustle obstacle course, Mr. Vallier said.
Those who would like to display snowmobiles may register free of charge at 9 a.m. Saturday at King’s Motel. Snowmobiles can be viewed by the public free of charge Saturday on Main Street along US-2.
A banquet from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday will include a presentation prepared by the founder of the Scorpion snowmobile, Mr. Vallier said. The banquet and prize drawings are open to the public and will be at Engadine Fire Hall.
Awards will be presented at the banquet in the category of Fun Ride, Favorite Antique and Fun Ride, Favorite Vintage. Each person who displays a snowmobile in the show will receive a dash plaque and a Scorpion hat.
The Antique Snowmobile Show is sponsored by the Naubinway-Engadine Merchants Association and endorsed by the Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Club of America.
