The 101st anniversary of St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in St. Ignace is Sunday, February 19, and the congregation is planning an anniversary ceremony in the summer.
The first mission was established at what is now St. Ignace by Father Jacques Marquette in 1671. A church building was built in 1837 on South State Street, where McGregor Oil’s Shell Station stands today. After the new church was built in 1905 on Church Street, the older building was moved to the corner of South State Street and Marquette Street and is now part of Marquette Mission Park and Museum of Ojibwa Culture.
