Casinos Donate $1.7 Million

Local projects in the Eastern Upper Peninsula, including street construction, police upgrades, recreation services, and community projects, were among those benefiting from $1.7 million donated in 2005 by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians through Kewadin Casinos.

Funds were distributed in May and December to various local government agencies in the tribe’s seven-county service area. In December, $1,036,181 was distributed, while $854,201 was given in May.

Counties receiving funding in December for various projects included: Mackinac County, $320,216.61; Chippewa County, $459,259.34; Alger County, $58,701.27; Luce County, $11,000; Marquette County, $79,565.69; and Schoolcraft County, $62,118.46.

Each year, the tribe contributes two percent of its casino slot machine earnings to local governments to support activities that affect both tribal and non-tribal families. The money is provided through an agreement with the State of Michigan.

Kewadin Casinos, owned by the tribe, operates five casino properties in the Upper Peninsula, employing 1,200 people. Fifty percent of casino employees are members of the tribe.
